Yep - I plan to replace the Intermediate Shaft Bearing with the LNE piece when my clutch is done next, but that won't be for a few years I don't think.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I just got a '99 996. It only has 47K miles. Took it in because the clutch was making a noise. After a review the mechanic has advised replacing the clutch and a few bearings in the transmission. He also checked the RMS and IMS and they both looked fine with no sign of leaks. My question is should i follow the 'if it isn't broke don't fix it' approach or should i be proactive and replace them both since the transmission is out anyway?
Just had a nearly $12,000 rebuild care of Porsche's warranty for IMS at 19,000 miles, so I would say do it. 997's were supposed to be largely immune to these worries, but it looks like the fix wasn't quite perfect in the 2007 3.8 engines. If I had a 996 - which is supposed to be more prone to RMS and IMS issues - and the engine was out, I'd bite the bullet and do it.
No doubt about it. The RMS has been updated and is better than the one you have in your '99 (or the one in my '00) and the LN Engineering IMS bearing is a $600 insurance policy against a possible catastrophic engine failure. My clutch is due to be replaced very soon, so while it's being done, the IMS and RMS are being replaced as well.
Yep - I plan to replace the Intermediate Shaft Bearing with the LNE piece when my clutch is done next, but that won't be for a few years I don't think.
Note that the RMS is a leak issue that is easily diagnosed. The IMS is a internal bearing failure that can not be diagnosed visually. A IMS about to fail may not leak, and a leaking IMS seal does not indicate a failure is imminent.
The RMS replacement will be cheap. An IMS bearing replacement will add at least $600 to your bill.
Do you know if the RMS, etc were done earlier in its life? You can find out from the dealer by giving the VIN#. I did that with my 99 (that I bought recently with 62k miles) and looks like all these issues were taken care years ago. That way you can see if this was done, but still if you want piece of mind and some insurance just do it! It will safe you some headaches down the road.
if nothing else I think the RMS is <$12 part from Sunset.
If you got this far -- the RMS should be a breeze.
I would also do the IMSR -- but that is me.

The RMS is a common and inexpensive repair with the clutch out. If you replace it be sure to use the latest Porsche part, not an aftermarket seal.
The IMS issue is a bit more involved. Porsche will replace the seal with a newer cover plate if it is leaking. Porsche doesn,t have a method to remove and replace the IMS bearing .If it is worn out and fails it can destroy the whole engine. Only LN Engineering has parts to replace the IMS beasing. For peace of mind I would do both if my car and I planned on keeping it any time at all. I bought and sold a 99 996 last year and was worried about a potential IMS failure all the time I owned it. Only a small percentage will fail but $600 extra is a small charge compared to the cost of engine replacement.
