Leading evidence: 'Use 7700 rpm (tuned) not the normal 7500' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'overstates speed like other german cars' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Test on tracks' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suspected cause
I get higher speed in gears, as reported on speedometer (which i suspect overstates speed like other german cars.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Can we put together a chart of top speed in each gear for all the different versions of the
Boxster
and
Cayman
? I've always wanted to be able to talk about the different models in real world numbers and I just thought it would be a fun project to see the differences in actual speeds between a base, R, S, TPC turbo... ect.

265hp- Here's my car (from the best of my memory)...
1st 35 mph
2nd 65 mph
3rd 95 mph
4th 120 mph
5th 140 mph
6th 160 mph
Obviously, PAG has published these numbers for each car. They are easy to look up. For example, the 2013 Boxster Specs for top speed, PDK and manual, because they are different, are here
http://press.porsche.com/vehicles/2013/2013_Boxster_Specs_Final.pdf
If you mean "observed" speeds, because the speedometers all have built-in conservative errors, they won't mean much unless you pull them off a GPS - if you want accuracy.
In any case,
be careful here.
Make sure you're "observed" speed are
observed on the track
and not 160 mph on a public road. Fair warning.
thank you
I looked at Porsche's data in your link... am I missing something? I guess I just don't know how to turn that data into a simple mph chart?

Yes, you can convert gear ration, RPMs, and Tire size to mph. Google it.
However, magazines have done what you ask here since the 1950s. So for one example, see
2014 Jaguar F-Type Versus 2013 Porsche Boxster - Porsche Boxster Versus Jaguar F-Type at Lime Rock in Connecticut - Road & Track
The have done instrumented testing on tracks. So you can see a 2013 BS with PDK is
1 - 44
2 - 75
3 - 104
etc.
Just google it. It will all be out there.
As to a fair warning, I meant do not post videos of yourself doing some blatantly highly illegal speeding on US public roads. It won't be condoned.
Thank you.
I think the 2.9 6 speed manual is wrong. I am not sure what they are, but I believe at a minimum 70 arrives in 2nd before redline. I believe it is actually 72. All i know is I got a speeding ticket ringing 2nd out and he clocked me at 70
. Thinking he was fleecing me I went back later and revisited the top of second and confirmed his gun was accurate.
EDIT: Messed up, the
cayman
2.9 6mt is the G87:20 transmission i believe
The drive ratio of the 6spd manual:
1st gear 3.66
2nd gear 2.05
3rd gear 1.407
4th gear 1.133
5th gear 0.972
6th gear 0.822
Final Drive is 3.87
so at 7200rpm you get
40mph
71mph
104mph
129mph
150mph
177mph
These are the correct gear ratios as far as I can tell, however the quoted top speed of the 2.9 cayman with 6mt is 163mph and I believe that is gear limited and not drag limited soo.....either porsche has it wrong on the ratio, or they have it wrong on the top speed. Confusing.
Double Edit:
After further research I believe these are correct. If you look at the published ratios for the 2014 Base Cayman it would imply that it has a top speed of 173 miles per hour (gear limited) while Porsche publishes a top speed of 165mph. The gearing is subtly different but VERY close to the 987.2 6mt. I do believe most modern Porsches are electronically rev limited and the Cayman is no exception. Guess top speed is electronically limited too, or else it is higher than published.

So barring anyone finding a simple table somewhere on the web that shows top speed in each gear for each different model of
Cayman
and
Boxster
... who would like to chip-in and help me gather info?
Thanks, my numbers in the first post were too low for the 987.2 2.9 as I had a chance to try 3rd gear today at 7,200 rpms. I think your numbers are correct.
Back in my NSX days, one of the more popular mods was to install a set of short gears to eliminate some of the tall gearing that was better suited for high-speed runs in German vs American roads. As I'm still new to the
Porsche
world, is this something that
Porsche
owners and after market suppliers ever experiment with?
I think the 6 speed in the regular
Boxster/Cayman
has better gearing for acceleration than the 6 speed in the
Boxster S
/
Cayman S
. Not sure if you could swap in a
911
6 speed but those are even better for straight line.
Here are the calculations I did for my '14 Base
Cayman
with 18" Wheels and standard shifter for 7200 RPM final Drive ratio =3.89.
1st.......41MPH.............ratio..3.67
2nd......74MPH.............ratio..2.05
3rd......103MPH............ratio..1.46
4th......134MPH............ratio..1.13
5th......156MPH............ratio..0.97
6th......180MPH............ratio..0.84
I got curious about gear ratios and i did my own AI assisted research, trying to correct any bad data (AI ingests alot of forum data which, you know can be erroneous). So this is my best guess for numbers. I changed to top speed numbers to reflect the +200 rpm from a
Softronic tune
... The main useful take away is the 11% and 5% shorter 1st and second gears. Interesting when compared to my power curve post
(13) 2010 Boxter and Boxter S HP/TQ graph combined into one with US units | Planet-9 Porsche Forum
Note: I edited the table to reflect (slighly) different final drive ratios and different (slightly shorter) 5th and 6th gears.
Hmmmmm.... if I'm reading this correctly (entirely possible I'm confused..) it looks as if a plain
Boxster
goes almost 5MPH faster top speed than an /S? I wonder what the comparison with
PDK
is (possibly the same since it appear attributable to the additional +200RPM redline on the base model.)
Edited table to reflect more precise specs. no major change. I get higher speed in gears, as reported on speedometer (which i suspect overstates speed like other german cars.
