Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi chaps, I went out for a run in my 2004 C4 this afternoon and after a good warmup, I gave it some beans. The engine started badly misfiring and the Check Engine - Drive to Workshop light came on. I limped the 2 miles back home and don't know whether I should buy a diagnostic tool to try to find out what is wrong first, or chance driving it to my nearest Indy - which is about 15 miles away. Temperature, oil pressure, coolant level all fine. Full service incl new plugs at RPM back in April. Nothing obviously wrong, so I'm hoping it is something simple like a coil pack. The misfire was very obvious, with power significantly down and the car rocking under gentle acceleration. I'm supposed to be doing the Cotswold Rally in 2 weeks, so keen to get it fixed. Any thoughts? And any recommendations for a reasonable code reader? Many thanks ! Rod - in Welwyn.

POST 2Original post

I think your diagnosis is right that it’s probably a coil pack. I’d call a garage sooner rather than later as they’re all so busy these days and you don’t want to miss your trip.

POST 3Original post

Just take it to your local specialist they will stick their kit on it and tell you what's at fault and book you in.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am relieved to report that it was just a coil pack that had failed. I never knew that a misfire on one cylinder could affect the car so dramatically. I went to PorscaCare in Stevenage, who fitted me in on the same day and had the car ready for collection the following day. Seriously impressed with their service ! Thanks for the advice all.
