Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Tiptronic We have tested and changed all pullies and water pump is fine.
Leading evidence: 'Replace pullies and water pump is fine' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check heat shields' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I would whip the rear bumper off and check the heat shields.

a length of hosepipe - hold one end to your ear and then search for the noise with the other end, like using a stethoscope.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi All
Il getting frustrated as this metallic like a coin in the can at the back.
On my 996 3.4 2001. Tiptronic We have tested and changed all pullies and water pump is fine.
Strange metallic noise at the rear at idle and low RPM. Sometime more noticeable
My key says that is the torque converter that can get noise overtime and not to be worried about.
My mechanic said that is not exhaust issue but I thought the same as the gearbox works fine.
I maybe need some other local mechanic to remove the exhaust.
When we lift the car in the ramp the noise was more towards the gearbox and not to the back.
Ben
You need to home in on where the noise is coming from. Use a listening stick or pipe, eg. a length of hosepipe - hold one end to your ear and then search for the noise with the other end, like using a stethoscope.
Noises are weird in so much as they often come from not where they sound if that makes sense. I would whip the rear bumper off and check the heat shields. Mine were shot at 20 years old due to galvanic corrosion between the aluminium shields and the mounting hardware, causing noise at idle a bit like you describe.
Thanks All,
Very useful
I didn’t know that you can see the heat shields from behind the bumper.
I guess you still need the ramp and remove the exhaust muffer to Replace them
Ben
No you don't , you can remove them without touching anything else. M6 bolts holding them on but beware they might snap so go easy on them (if that's what it is)
You need to identify where the noise is coming from. It's simple! All these ideas about removing stuff and swapping parts is like asking Stevie Wonder to be your navigator.
Yes, I believe this is the best way to go.
I found a man that has exactly the same noise but as I don’t have Facebook I can’t reach him out.
If someone with faceboook can help me on this and reach out him and ask what was the issue. See link below:
Agree with Alex, this is not going to get solved by talking to people. Any competent mechanic should be able to to tell the area the noise is coming from by listening with a stick, stethoscope, etc.
Thank you so much Alex.
Really appreciate it. Because it lives no far from I live and the noise is exactly the same,
If he fixed the issue with someone local I can sort it as well.
Finger cross, otherwise I’ll take to another Porsche specialist.
Ben
I started a thread this morning about identifying noises, but I'll share the video here too. All these comments, as usuful as they are, won't tell you what's wrong.
