Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Hi, Grateful for your insight on an old topic but would be super helpful for me. My car has the larger IMS bearing ( M97 engine ) and I'm replacing the leaking seal, I'm trying to find a definative spec for torque value for tightening the 22mm centre bolt. I've seen many different values outlined ranging from 10nm to 50nm - these were from both forums and direct contact with engine parts and rebuild companies. Thanks in advance for your insight on this, your help is appreciated!

POST 2Original post

Hey @mcatsh , I can see why you're asking for clarification—that's a massive range of torque specs for the IMS flange bolt on your M97! Have any of the rebuild companies you contacted been able to explain why their number differs so much from others? Adding a bit more context on what they said might help the experts here zero in on the right answer for you.

POST 3Original post

Hi, Thanks for the feedback on this. I haven't had any specific reasoning for the differences. Some of the info comes from various online sources, but the highest-value 50nm is from a very well-known and reputable Porsche engine-build company. The high value does concern me greatly, as this isn't something to get wrong with the risk of shearing the stub.

POST 4Original post

I am struggling to understand what 22 mm bolt you are talking about? Are you talking about item 17 on PET dwg 103-010? That is a M12 nut, not a bolt. I have attached a pdf of the shop manual instructions for that nut. The torque value is 9 ft-lb +/- 0.5 and it finicky to measure that low of a torque without the right tools. As shown in the attached pdf, you have to hold the IMS from turning with a screwdriver, which complicates torque measurement greatly. You should also be installing a new, out of the Porsche bag nut, with the pre-applied blue sealant. Trying to use alternate sealant methods will throw off your torque value. I have attached 2 pdfs.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
