Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion

I've read somewhere that the plastic shroud is fused together and doesn't use clips which worries me about possible damage when disassembling it

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My recently purchased 02 turbo has got some misting in the rear view mirror, which I understand is oil leaking internally, any advice on repair or replacement? TIA

POST 2Original post

Hi I got mine from mirrorjohn.com same as the BMW one if I remember correctly. Instructions on the site too.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks, I’ll check that out

POST 4Original post

I used mirror John and the service and product were/still are great

POST 5Original post

damn - heat killed mine today big a55 bubble in it

POST 6Original post

as a follow up the stuff that is in the mirror is NASTY stuff - and has proper eaten and melted the inside - its killed one of the light sensors and I think is borderline saveable... MirrorJohn has been super helpful but I did put a hold on the order as I wasnt sure if I can get the sensors - ordered some for £6 to try - worried it will always look like its been apart :-( So anyone know if I fork out for a new one at some £600 !!! minus custodian discount - are they built the same way and therefore will oose crap out in another few years.... (the mirrorjohn ones are made different and won't leak apparently) ? I'll take some pics of the housing but its close to being thrown away and I can't find a decent secondhand one

POST 7Original post

I was thinking of buying one from mirrorjohn, do we know if the process is straightforward to replace? I've read somewhere that the plastic shroud is fused together and doesn't use clips which worries me about possible damage when disassembling it

It wasn’t too bad to get apart. There was some minor marring but you would never see it. The worst part is for mine was the inside was melted. The chromatic oil is nasty and just eats the plastic. I’m debating buying a new unit completely so might be selling my MirrorJohn one (he missed my message and so dispatched already) I’ve ordered a LDR (the sensor) as the goop ate the front of it…. So I think I can save it for about £110

POST 9Original post

You should be able to get a Genuine one for about £400+ vat

POST 12Original post

I rang my friend in the OPC parts and she gave the price of £475.99 inc - I can get discount but that is a fair chunk of change the mirror £115 posted and came today as did the 2 LDR's at £6.84 delivered - So I will attempt a repair

POST 14Original post

That’s the mess the oil made, deactivated with Isopropyl and then water wash, had to reshape ie sand some of the plastic so it will shut and join neatly There might be a couple of minor marks on the back part, but a working mirror should be possible The white mark in the middle is not budging and there is some discolouration on the 2 bottom corners …
