Better to hit it with some other spray-on lubricant - I use a white lithium spray.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Purchased a new to me 987.2 Base Cayman . Had a clunk in the drivers door that I heard over expansion joints and rough pavement. I pushed pulled and jiggled the door and could not reproduce the sound. Found the little plastic door close guide has some slight movement so I thought that must be it and pulled the door apart to tighten it up only to discover there is no fastener on the backside. Checked everything else while I had the door apart and all seemed solid and not rattles or clunks I could find with the highly technical palm dead blow. Anyway, put it all back together and the rattle persisted. Out of desperation I finally gave the door latch a small shot of WD40 and the sound was completely gone. So, lesson being, start with the simple stuff first even if you see indications there might be something loose. Would have saved me a hour or so of digging in to the door.

POST 2Original post

Congratulations. Those clunks and rattles drive me nuts. One suggestion: WD-40 is not an ideal long-term lubricant. While the product does include lightweight lubricating oils in the formula, it functions primarily as a powerful solvent, rust penetrant, and moisture displacer. It can strip away old grease and it evaporates fairly quickly. Better to hit it with some other spray-on lubricant - I use a white lithium spray.

POST 3Original post

Agree. I probably should have called that out. I had the WD right there and just grabbed it. Planned to go back with something more substantial later if that fixed it.

POST 4Original post

@phanophish I like your way of thinking. That has always been my mantra. Go with the easiest, cheapest, simplest fix before digging deeper into more expensive, more difficult attempts at fixing an issue. Majority of the time that’s all it takes.

POST 5Original post

Have any of you tried Remoil? Maybe just me but it’s not only easy to source it’s just amazing product which is also great on firearm rust abatement too, just an excellent lubricant IMO. To add to Chuck’s statement, many times an approach of ruling out what it’s not is a beneficial approach.

POST 6Original post

I had the same problem in my Boxster . Lived with the noise for 5 years. Ordered a new window regulator cause I was sure that was it. While inside the door I grabbed the lock mechanism and it had some play. Put simply, the lock is a piece of metal joined together to a piece of plastic. That joint can work loose slightly over time. I ended up buying a new lock and it had no give between the two parts. Noise is gone. I have a good but original driver side window regulator if anyone wants one.
