I have a hard top for the R107 which will never ever get used by me but is still being painted as part of the refurb - but she will only be used for sunny days and will have a lovely bed to sleep in - had it been different I reckon i would winter with a lid on it

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • 911uk: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

2 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

Outcome without a verified action link

I had the problem fixed but was always wary after that.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

For all you cabriolet owners out there - do you put your hard top on over winter and if so when do you typically put it on? Previous boxster owner which didn't have the hard top option, i don't have a garage so the car stays out all weathers - i've just bought a half cover for it and can't decide whether to use that over winter so i might be able to grab some top down action if the weather cheers up - or bite the bullet come mid-October and stick the hard top on until early next year I have the plastic rear window so well aware of the dangers of dropping the roof when its below 8-9 degrees - split the window in my mk1 MX5 many years ago doing that

POST 3Original post

When I had by cab the hard top just sat strapped to the wall. First time I put it on was when I sold the car…

POST 4Original post

My only concern is with leaving the hood down for long periods. I am sure it is designed to fold down for long periods but my 1st cab had issues which I put down to the previous owner only driving the car with the hard top on. I had the problem fixed but was always wary after that. My current cab does not have a hard top, just as well as storing it is a nightmare unless one has a large garage or the garage has a very high ceiling!

POST 5Original post

I understood that it’s not good for the soft top to be used in cold weather. I plan to fit my hardtop soon and use that for six months until May next year.

POST 6Original post

I used to but it was annoying and slightly damaged the soft top as the underside of the parcel shelf presses on the folded down hood. It also rattles over bumps. When I fit a new soft top I never bothered after that. Lot of hassle with not much gain.......the only thing I can think of is good visibility out the glass heated window.

POST 7Original post

I did a thread on it 10 years ago: Thread 'German helmet or bareback for winter?' 26 Nov 2015 So, this time last year (wow that went quick) I was donning a shiny silver helmet ready for those winter months (see below) but as yet, I'm still having the odd day of top down motoring, even though most the time it's peeing down. I don't know whether I can be bothered fitting the hard top or just leave it in the garage so I can still have a nice fresh winter blast when the suns out. What's all the other hairdressers and pansies done? Alex Replies: 20 Forum: Porsche 911 996 (1997-2005)

POST 8Original post

And tonight I drove home from work topless with the heated seat on as it was a pleasant evening.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I did put mine on a couple of weeks ago, after a few dry days to make sure everything was as dry as could be before folding - hasn't really stopped raining since! As my car stays outside all year round, I am happy that it will be more weather proof through the worst of the weather, although i do miss the option for winter top down drives like alex enjoyed yesterday

POST 10Original post

Problem is with it folded up over the winter is it gets damp and is susceptible to mold.

POST 11Original post

I put the top down so long as it is not raining. I have heated seats so even freezing temperatures don't bother me and I get to enjoy open top motoring all year round Just had a new softtop put on so may get one of these half car covers for the really bad months as it does sit outside all year.

POST 12Original post

I put mine on every winter.. Its been on a few weeks at this point.. back off in the spring time

POST 13Original post

I had a hard top for my Boxster and used that all year round, it was a bit like having two cars as it was a different driving experience for both.

Being the 996.1 mine has the plastic rear window so am always super cautious of folding a roof when the temp is below 8-10 degrees as the window can split (as i found out many years ago in a mk1 MX5)

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

seems like the worst of the weather has passed and unlikely to get anymore heavy frost or snow - so when do owners take the hard top off again (for those that put them on)? Is there a recommended min temp to avoid issues with the plastic rear screen? i seem to remember a long time ago when i had a mk1 MX5 it was suggested not to lower the roof below 8 degrees to avoid splitting the plastic
