Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Reported cause
Your biggest issue is the majority of scored ones are tiptronic.
Leading evidence: 'majority of scored ones are tiptronic' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'majority of scored ones are tiptronic' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hartech also said larger diameter heads, plenum and better exhaust make no difference.
I've got low £30k to spend on a new weekend toy. I am considering of course a higher mileage 997.2 but also a 996 c4s and doing a 3.9 conversion. Ideally a 996 c4s manual convertible with a scored engine.
Roughly the same price, roughly.
I spoke to Hartec and they said 350bhp. That confuses me since most sources I've read suggest higher. Of course torque is the main point but I still wonder about the power.
Hartech also said larger diameter heads, plenum and better exhaust make no difference. I understood that is true of a non modified engine but on a 3.9/4.1 Slaker in the US always upgraded the headers etc.
Any thoughts or comments?
The 350bhp sounds right as the standard is 320bhp on a C2 and the increase gives around 10%, but the C4 never pulls as much due to the drivetrain and way they test them.
Personally I don't think you need the power increase. The mid range is where these cars need a bit more umph and the capacity increase does that perfectly well with the extra low down torque.
I'd 100% have a 3.9 996 C4S over a gen 2 997.
Turbo doesn't look as good as the C4S IMO and yes I don't feel it necessary to spend £40k to get into a classic 911. I also don't want a turbo car.
I feel the C4S has aged wonderfully. I also like the 997.2 that I still mistake for something a lot newer when I see one driving towards me. But I want something older and retro cool.
The one I can't stand is the 997.1. IMHO they look dated, in a bad way. Yuk.
I don't see how you'd be in budget and in a car soon with this plan, it's a bit too specific of a scenario, and you're asking for someone to almost give it away considering the cost of everything else that might need sorting apart from the rebuild
That's C4 in need of some TLC money not C4S money, just go on autotrader and check. The scenario where a 3.6 is so bore scored that someone is giving it away for peanuts is quite rare, and it hinges on them not doing the rebuild themselves too.
The conversion price is right, but there are numerous other engine out jobs you'll end up adding to the conversion: exhaust, fuel rails, brake lines, coolant lines, starter, AOS, coolant tank, you take your pick.
Then you add all the other bits to get your money's worth enjoy a car with a 3.9 conversion...suspension, brakes, gearbox, interior TLC, etc.
I just don't think it's doable if you want it properly done, yes you can spread this over a year or two I suppose but with the mandate "spend 30-35k and have a fully sorted 996 C4S 3.9" I think you might be a touch off the mark
It's easy doable if you bide your time and wait for a scored car to come up on the market. Your biggest issue is the majority of scored ones are tiptronic.
