Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion
Then to separate the clean lens from the big silver bit and the clear ring there are some small clear plastic pins that locate into holes and are lightly 'heat blobbed' on the other side to hold them in.
Leading evidence: 'Set about carefully dismantling it although it' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'good one' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean lens' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I used instructions from retrofit lab website to remove the projector and adjustment mechanism, then took my time to remove the ribbed reflective piece, then the whole unit in the oven for 20mins at 80-90deg, gentry prying of the lens and it popped off.

Suspected cause
Alex's suggestion of trying to swish it out with a light solvent liquid is probably a good one but if it starts to lift the chrome plating there's not a lot you can do from that point.

Mine is still in bits as it wasn't viable to re-chrome the damaged pieces, but at least I have a very good clean lens as a spare if I ever need it!

Just be very careful as in my experience the chrome plating was very fragile and even the gentle contact from the soft sponge on a stick that I was using through the bulb hole was enough to take the coating off in a few places.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Looking at a possible 996 turbo purchase, but there are some marks on the headlights and I'm wondering if the front lens cover can be separated to clean them up?
The marks I'm talking about seem to be between the silver part and the lens cover, I've added a photo, hopefully you can make out what I mean.
No experience but pretty sure you can remove the lenses with a bit of patience and heat. Resealing them might be the tricky bit.
I have seen this company mentioned for refurbishment and upgrade works

Either way I wouldn't let it put you off a prospective purchase if the rest of the car stacks up
I'd try swilling them out with something 1st. There's various products on the market now I think that do this. Separating would be a last resort......just after I'd purchased another set.
Thanks, I'll have a look of their site.
I found this as well, so I guess it's doable.
Thread '996.2 Headlight - Dismantled - Re-Chrome Bits?'
17 Jun 2025
At some point in PO history the round parking light bulb cover had been left off my nearside headlight casing, leading to damp getting in. Unfortunately caused damage to the silvering in some areas, most notably the ribbed part of the main beam reflector and a section of the main chrome trim in front of it. Unfortunately made slightly worse by me trying to clean what I initially thought was dirt through the bulb-hole with a soft sponge on a stick! Doh!
I know there aren't any tutorials specifically for the 996.2 sealed halogen unit but I set about carefully dismantling it although it...

It's an unusual colour, Meridian, can look lilac, silver or bronze, depending on the light, but I like different colours so I'm happy with that. I would have preferred a black interior though, this one is grey, which I'm sure I can live with in reality. Should make for an interesting daily I think.
The car is in the North of England, I was also lining up to look at another couple of cars further South, but couldn't arrange a Saturday viewing with them, so I ended up coming home again.
Just phoned the local Porsche dealer to see what it's next service would cost, quoted just over £3K
No wonder there are so many indies now.
You can remove all the bulbs, pour in whatever solution does the job, pour out and then a good half hour blast with a hair dryer down each bulb aperture.
soapy warm water will also probably do and then a good rinse out with water.
Just be very careful as in my experience the chrome plating was very fragile and even the gentle contact from the soft sponge on a stick that I was using through the bulb hole was enough to take the coating off in a few places. You can tell from the pics in my post linked by eko above that the damage to the coating was in areas right in front of the halogen main beam bulbs so I expect weakened by heat cycles and the rest, like where your marks are is less fragile.
Alex's suggestion of trying to swish it out with a light solvent liquid is probably a good one but if it starts to lift the chrome plating there's not a lot you can do from that point.
Also it is not that difficult to separate the sealed units into their components, as you can see from my pics I managed to do it without breaking anything at all I was just very careful. Mine is still in bits as it wasn't viable to re-chrome the damaged pieces, but at least I have a very good clean lens as a spare if I ever need it!

Then to separate the clean lens from the big silver bit and the clear ring there are some small clear plastic pins that locate into holes and are lightly 'heat blobbed' on the other side to hold them in. I filed the melted bits gently until they released the pins. Fiddly but not difficult.
I've put a deposit on the car today, and lining up to collect it on Friday.
I'll keep you updated with how I get on with the headlights, hopefully a quick fix
