Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I checked the old filter for any debris and found...
Leading evidence: 'Check filter' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check asap' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

the spades seemed pretty green and corroded so i cleaned them and cleaned the tops on the actual sender.

It's easy to check by removing the oil filter housing cover and checking the filter is still nice and cylinder shaped !

As you say it could also be the oil sender as they are also a common failure point but they don't commonly fail by reading low, and in this case it does read high until warm which is why I suggested checking for a crushed filter first!

You also need to clean the female terminals which in the car will be difficult but try and get something in there , so hard as you need both hands up to hold them.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

i have a problem with my 2000 3.4 C2. oil pressure when cold is fine. hot oil pressure at idle sits around 1.2 bar. under normal driving the oil pressure sits around 2- 2.5 bar. full acceleration all the way to 7k rpm the pressure wont go over 3 bar. sometimes it will dip to 2 bar then spike to 3 bar once ive lifted off the throttle. its driving me mad. any help appreciated. im using 5w40 oil and its reading just off full on the dipstick.
Did it start happening after a service by any chance? There's a fairly common problem where the oil filter element collapses and restricts the oil flow. Its caused by certain brands of filter not having the plastic reinforcement tube inside. It's easy to check by removing the oil filter housing cover and checking the filter is still nice and cylinder shaped !
You will only lose the small amount in the filter housing, ie less than 1/4 litre.
You will need a filter cap removal tool and something to catch the oil in.
If you don't feel comfortable having a go yourself any garage should do it cheaply, or I'm sure you'll have a friend you could bribe with a beer

Thread 'Oil change and collapsed filter plus split oil filler tube Horrors!!!!!'
13 Sep 2025
It was time to do an oil and filter change on my new 997.1 Cabriolet but what I found annoyed me!!!
Oil and filter changes on a 996 or 997 are so easy and the parts inexpensive. The last oil change completed by and Indy was just about 3k miles ago but when I dropped the oil filter this is what I found. The oil filter was completely crushed. On inspection the filter had no central strengthening skeleton making crushing inevitable. You can see the lack of strengthening when compared to the correct Bosch P9144 item (£10 from Halfords). I checked the old filter for any debris and found...

This thread shows a squashed filter
early morning guess and considerations- does the filter system not have a by pass valve to prevent oil starvation when filter medium becomes blocked? Perhaps a collapsed filter would cause continued reduced flow rather than spiking? Worth checking the oil pressure sensor, these can send erratic signals when failing…. More likely to cause apparent pressure fluctuations
It does have a bypass valve but the crushed filter blocks the outlet pipe so the by pass can't bypass!

You might be right, just offering hopefully less destructive alternates. Heat can also effect the pressure sender and cause similar behaviour as the op describes.
I was just going to post about the common sender probs! Anyway post 6 in this thread has some things to check!

Not sure of the 997 but my oil level "meter" failed on mine and was changed when I took the engine out recently however it didn't read at all so I knew it was that.
It's very long and goes in behind the AC compressor.

Now works perfect on a 28yr old car and if used correctly as Giz has mentioned is a brilliant thing , just take time to learn how to use it.

A new sender isn't too bad but get an OEM one. VDO

I painted mine Gold to match the fuel rails I'd just painted.
