Hi all, a couple of weeks ago I installed a set of
numeric cables
and shifter. The quality is fantastic, and it does feel great to shift... gears 3 up.. until full warm.... at first.
I had read online how most people complain of 1st and 2nd gear being notchy/hard to shift until warm. This is something I have experienced for 3 years on the OEM cables and a mix of shifter. OEM SSk, OEM
997.2
GT3
and an after market SSK.
I read that new fluid can sometimes help so ordered some Millers 75/90 hoping it would be here for the weekend.... but it didn't show up.
So Saturday I thought i'd investigate and have a proper look at the gearbox end. I noticed the gears shifted lovely even when cold, when going through the gears using the leavers on the box itself. Which made me wonder why it didn't shift as nice when using the gear stick..
Anyway, after looking at how the linkage works, I had convinced myself the cables that controls the side to side motion needed to be 5mm longer. The cables were adjusted to the max (I believe) so didn't have any extra to play with. So I got some 5mm plate steel and name a hose shoe shape adaptor that I put in-between the mounting bracket and cable, extending it by 5mm at the linkage end.
I have driven about 50 miles since, from cold, and the gear shift for 1st and 2nd are now really, really smooth. No longer notchy when cold and no resistance. It's made a huge improvement and is now how I expect the car to shift. I'm just mad at myself for not looking into this 3years ago
I know the 5 speed is a different configuration to the 6 speed. So can't say if this is a solution for others.
You diagnosed and fabricated a solution you are satisfied with and you get to enjoy it going forward; nothing but wins for you.
Super deal Synthedup. I assume that when you were looking at the natural range of motion of the lever on the side of the tranny and then at the actual movement from the existing cables, you felt you weren't getting enough push or pull? My hats off to you, LOL, that is a damn hard place to get even your hands into, much less doing mods!
Just to clarify, does your car have the 6 speed or 5 speed? Thanks.
Exactly that, I felt I needed just a few more mm for it to 'slip' in.
Hi, sorry! I missed an important bit if info. It's the 5Speed.
Hi
Synthedup
,
Any chance your solution (above) might be able to help me?
I have a 2005 Boxster S — I love it but the shifting into 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 6th all crunch and don't feel smooth.
How did you discover the 5mm length needed?

Me too! I just posted something something similar
