i’m planning on replacing my shift cable with
Numeric
Racing‘s shift cable. Porsche OEM cable is infamous for snapping. Mine snapped just months after warranty expires and left me stranded luckily it was only blocks from my house and just couple blocks before i enter the highway i was lucky to be able to park it and block someone’s driveway and then toll it to the dealer. Anyone did this?
Yes, it's a nice upgrade but in my Cayman I notice engine sounds transmitting through the cables. It may be less noticeable in your
spyder
since it's a soft top anyways. There are a few threads that exist regarding this topic if you're looking for more opinions. There are other alternatives as well - OEM cables with updated attachment points and linkage that Suncoast sells as a kit, function first has their cables that are similar to
numeric
but supposedly transmit less noise, etc.
Thanks for the heads up I already ordered the
Numeric Racing cables
. I think the louder shifting sound should be ok for me.
You definitely will hear some transmission noise coming through the cables but its not intrusive. AND the shifter and cables themselves make a metallic sound in action. I also removed the rubber in the crossover linkage and made a metal crossover link. It truly is rifle bolt precise now.
I personally love the mechanical symphony of each of these noises and love the precision of the shifter. It's a great piece of work.
06 cayman and 02 boxster replaced with
numeric cables
and short shifters . Been 5 plus years no issues but they’re not fault drivers either
Your description of the ‘mechanical symphony’ and ‘precision’ of the shifter has my curiosity piqued. Do you have more info or pictures of the crossover link you upgraded from rubber to metal? I replaced my OEM shifter with the Numeric short shifter but I’m still running the original cables on my ‘08 Boxster base and should I decide to upgrade them next I’d be interested in your cable mod.
I just had
Numeric cables
and their short shifter installed in my 2010 Boxster Base. It's only been a few days, but it's quickly becoming one of my favorite mods! I've owned the first three generations of
Miata
and an 01'
S2000
. Although I've not driven any of those earlier cars in a long time, the shift action in my Boxster now has that mechanical, direct connection feel you just don't find with cable shift transmissions. I hear a little driveline noise when I first crank the car, but then it settles and sounds like it always has. I guess the new NVH sleeves they include are doing the job. The
numeric shifter
replaced the GT3 short shifter I'd been running for five or six years. I'd had the bushings replaced in the GT3 shifter with aluminum bushings. I thought it felt pretty good, until I drove a 2012 Cayman with the
Numeric shifter
and cables. The combination of the shifter and cables with my Sport Shifter GT3 shift knob is as close to perfect as I think I can get. I'm extremely pleased.
Even with the
Numeric cables
I would get the upgraded bracket set from Porsche. I have the
Numeric shifter
and cables on my 991.2
Carrera
T which provided an outstanding result. My Gen 1
Boxster Spyder
has the Ben's shifter with Porsche upgraded brackets and cables, also delightful.
Thanks
@Ric_in_RVA
for the Info. I like the results you’ve achieved. Some production skills involved, but if I ever get to that mod I’ll be studying your setup and instructions.
the shift cables arrived but i probably wait until next year to do the replacement with my oil change. I didn’t get the shifter tho. I just dropped off my
spyder
to replace both of my front and rear bumpers and detail the car as well. Can’t wait until its done
