I was always unsure if it was the RMS or IMS flange, turned out the RMS was dry as a bone and it was the IMS flange, now all sorted.

as above, i wouldn't worry about it, they always look worse than it is, give it clean every now and then and check your oil on the dip stick.

Would I really need to replace a clutch with that little mileage on it?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Y'All, I have a very small oil leak from what looks like the RMS area, picture attached. The car had a mighty £5.4K service at a top Porsche Specialist 4 years ago when the Clutch, Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal, Tensioner Sealing Ring and a Gearbox Mounting were done amongst a shopping list of other stuff. The clutch has done 8K miles since then. I guess I can feel a bit hard done by if it all needs doing again. Would I really need to replace a clutch with that little mileage on it? I guess I will have no come back with the Specialist.... Just asking advice here... All the best, Phil.

POST 2Original post

I always thought that the early 996's had a fixed RMS and didn't leak...?

POST 3Original post

Well it shouldn't be the RMS at that mileage especially if it was fitted correctly but... It could be the IMS flange seal as well.

POST 4Original post

Will be the IMS flange seal (or lack of sealant on the bolts). Unless there's a puddle on the floor, Porsche will say - forget about it.

POST 5Original post

as above, i wouldn't worry about it, they always look worse than it is, give it clean every now and then and check your oil on the dip stick. Address it when the clutch needs doing.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

That's a relief. I have a Porsche mechanic coming Sunday to do a service but was rather disappointed to see the leak. The amount of oil leaking is tiny but I'm still a little vexed. My drive is on a hill so it always looks like there's less oil than there is....

over 50% of 996s on the road will be exactly like that.

Not to mention 986s too, doubling the number of M96 motors with this 'characteristic'.

POST 9Original post

Mine has leaked for the past 7 years until I recntly did the clutch etc. I was always unsure if it was the RMS or IMS flange, turned out the RMS was dry as a bone and it was the IMS flange, now all sorted. Took the deciison not to touch the RMS and left alone.
