Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Reported cause
The ride harshness was due to the necessary lack of suspension travel with 19" wheels.
Leading evidence: 'necessary lack of suspension travel' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'necessary lack of suspension travel' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Adjust height up and down' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I adjusted the height up and down to find the best compromise that I liked.

When those wore out I replaced with H&R coilovers.

I wrote a fairly long post easier this year about changing from 18" to 19" wheels.

11" is too wide for this car if you're still running 8" fronts (235s up front and 295 rear).
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have a 99 996 Cab, that came stock with the 18inch turbo twists and I would like to move up to 19inch but I would like to stick with stock Porsche rims maybe from a 997 or 991 and wondered what offsets fit best and what to look for? So who to ask but the people of the forum who have dealt with this before !!! If you have pics of your 996 with newer 19's please post them up, to help me decide!!! .............
Not to put a damper on your quest, but I think the general consensus is that 19" wheels don't look good enough to justify the harsh ride you'll get. I'm sure someone who actually has experience with 19s will chime in as I have not tried them on either of my 996s. But, it seems like there are many posts here from guys who did and returned to 18s. Maybe if the roads are glassy smooth in Ontario, you might be OK. In general, though, guys from colder climates tend to stick with 18s (and sometimes 17s for winter tires).
I have 19's on our 04 Targa. I bought the car with them, so I can't compare the ride to 18's
The Tires are Michelin AS/3 and they are really noisy. Don't know if that is because they are 19's or just POS. I would not say the ride is harsh in any case.
In addition to the diameter, the actual tire choice will make a difference as well
I have 18's on my Boxster and the ride is great.
Tire cost in 19" is higher than 18"
My car came with the 19" Carrera Classics off a 997, IMHO they just look too big for the car. It definitely rides higher, too high in my opinion. The aero kit helps disguise this, but my car doesn't have one.
Beyond the superficial, they are heavier than the 18s, and adding unsprung weight is never great. Also, they are 11" in the rear and 8" up front. 11" is too wide for this car if you're still running 8" fronts (235s up front and 295 rear). If you at all enjoy driving at/near the limit, it will understeer far too much. You can (must) trail brake like you wouldn't believe, but it just not very frisky past the apex.
I wrote a fairly long post easier this year about changing from 18" to 19" wheels. I drove on 19" wheels for 5 years on my 02 before dropping back to 18". I'll never go back.
The problem isn't the unsprung weight or angular momentum of the wheels etc. The problem is that the sidewall height is the same on 18" or 19" wheels for the 911 so the car rides 1/2" higher on 19" wheels. Dropping it back down to a reasonable height reduces the suspension travel dramatically. And that really makes the ride harsh.
I don't believe the factory suspension adjustable for height. What did you use to lower the car that reduces suspension travel dramatically ? Depending on how it was lowered.....That would most likely be the source of the ride harshness not the 19.
Brad, if I could find 17" rims I liked for under $2400 I would be riding on 17s all day long. I have brand new 18" rims from Wheel Dynamics and I am very very happy with the way they look and the customer service I experienced at Wheel Dynamics. If you want 19s go for it! It's your car.
It was first lowered using Techart coilovers. When those wore out I replaced with H&R coilovers. The ride harshness was due to the necessary lack of suspension travel with 19" wheels. I adjusted the height up and down to find the best compromise that I liked. But the ride and handling on 18" wheels is significantly better AND the overall height is still lower than with 19" wheels. I've run both setups for more than a year each.
