Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that suspect a cause
1
0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Suspected cause
I would be very surprised if it was the pilot bearing.
Leading evidence: 'pilot bearing' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'pilot bearing' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace oil and look' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm starting to get a little bit of gearbox whine - it's still very quiet at this point, but the noise is reminiscent of a sequential gearbox. The car has been rock-solid since the water pump bearing went out a little over 2 years ago, so I guess I can't bitch too much about the car finally needing a little TLC.
Has anyone DIY'd the pilot bearing? Is this DIYable with jack stands? I don't have access to a lift, hoist, etc.
I removed the front wheel drive components a while back, so I won't have to deal with any of that stuff...but I'm curious how much time I'm looking at and where it rates on the 1-10 difficulty scale.
Thanks!
After learning that I might not actually know where the drain plug is, I had my indie paint it bright yellow for me. Just in case.
I can't wait to see how many friends he makes if he actually does buy a turbo...
I don't yet know with certainty that the issue is the pilot bearing - it sounds very much like what a previous vehicle sounded like when the pilot bearing was on the way out, and I'm finding some Google traction for other 996's with this issue.
The sound at this point is VERY faint - I only happened to notice it because my wife was driving, the windows were down, the radio was off. I'll have to get her to drive me around somewhere quiet so I can concentrate on the noise.
At this point I'm trying to get an idea of the complexity involved and see if it's worth trying DIY. I'm no shrinking violet when it comes to DIY, but I also don't ever want to be the guy flatbedding a disassembled car to the mechanic.
I would be very surprised if it was the pilot bearing. I would be even more surprised if you can actually pull the trans. If you do, there are many other things to do while its out.
Apparently it doesn't matter, because the resident DIY overlord says I can't do it. Woe, woe is me.
The mistake you're making here, KK, is assuming that you can get away with the same Yoda s**t that Raby pulls. The difference is that some people actually give a damn what Raby says.
If anyone who actually put some miles on their transmission cares to weigh in, that would be super. Maybe it will keep the parrot from chattering.
KK, if the things you're fingering leave a lot of debris on your fingers, maybe you need to start paying for a better class of "lady."
I can almost envision you wandering around after Jake..."seriously, bruh...smell my fingers!"
