Just checked: right side is still warm after 1.5 hrs since I got home and left side is cool.
Leading evidence: 'Check right side is still warm' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check car and i'm pretty sure' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I think I read someplace that they put some plastic pieces in there because some folks were throwing cigarette butts out the window of their Boxsters, and they were being sucked into the intake and setting the paper air filter on fire.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I notice when I look at the engine cutout, that I assumed the engine takes air in from both sides:
But on my car, it looks like there is a solid piece of plastic inside the vent:
Does the car only pull air from one side? Or is that piece of plastic supposed to slide in some way to allow additional air when needed?
Do other people have the same type of cover on the driver side air intake?
See this article:

I know the answer, check out the removal of the plastic pieces in some photos I took last summer at
http://www.kcrpca.org/boxster.asp
I need to do a similar article for the Cayman the parts, other than the vents are identical.
I think I read someplace that they put some plastic pieces in there because some folks were throwing cigarette butts out the window of their Boxsters, and they were being sucked into the intake and setting the paper air filter on fire. Might be an urban legend... but it sure sounds good.

Looks like the server is still down...must be a bigger issue than turning the server back on.
I have found references to people 'desnorkeling' their boxters, which is basically removing a cup shapped thing where the air goes in....but I couldn't find anything that looked like this.
If it is their simply to stop cigarettes, then I'm ready to take that thing out! /fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/MWPX/tounge_smile.gif I could possibly see it protecting water if you were 'splashed' on by a car going past you...

That's bizarre - I don't have this on my car! and I didn't fill in a form saying that I was a non-smoker either!
Is the idea that if you have a right hand drive car then it would be on the left and vice-versa because even if it was it doesn't stop a passenger throwing a cigarette out of the car!
I'm curious to see how many people don't have this cover....
I wonder if it's one of those things that only American cars have due to the lawsuits over here. Same reason why we don't have the remote window controls.
Yes something strange has happened with that server, it lost power during a storm we had here yesterday, but shut down gracefully with the UPS, etc. Upon reboot it says it doesn't have a driver for for the NIC card in the machine. Ok, no problem, visit manufacturer's website download latest driver and install right? Well I do that and it says none of the drivers are compatible with the NIC card. Ugh... Might have to go out and buy another NIC card or see if I can find another driver.
Ok...now that the site is up, I can see pics...but doesn't really explain the plastic. It is replaced with the wire mesh in the pics?
How does the initial plastic grill come off?
I'm certainly not looking to just up and take the thing out without knowing a little more. Certainly if the UK is missing the piece, it must be ok to not have it there at all. But I'd love to be able to take a peek behind the thing.
OK - I know this doesn't help, but SOMEWHERE I read the reason why the two sides are different... I'll see if I can find it online. ==RedEye

This is NOT where I first saw this, but for now:
There are plenty of useful touches, including an interior luggage net atop the engine to hold small items in place. There’s very little without a function – even the exterior air intakes aren’t just for show. The right one cools the engine compartment, the left goes straight to the air intakes.

I have verified that the left side is the only air intake. The left side is purly for ventilation. If you look inside the right vent, you'll see a fan that leads directly to the engine compartment.
I thought I read the left side is intake and the right is
exhaust
. If this is true, then after driving the car the right side should be rather warm... which is what I have noticed. Just checked: right side is still warm after 1.5 hrs since I got home and left side is cool.
I guess I had assumed that it took air IN the right side as opposed to forcing it out. Thought I do not know for sure, it seems odd that the air would be forced against the oncoming air of the car. In my mind, I can only assume the air comes inside the right vent, through the engine and out the bottom.
But as I said, I can only speculate.
Guys, that link is working again where I dismantled the air intake on the driver's side (U.S. drivers - left hand side). You can see how the restrictor plate is designed to keep items out of your intake, but still let air in, just not in the most efficient manner. The other side of the car the air intake is for ventilation into the engine compartment, the fan helps suck outside air in, especially when sitting still in traffic, etc. and helps to cool the engine compartment and move air out the bottom of the car.
I will take the photos from that boxster page plus a few others I found and do an article here in the next day or two.
OK so we can then assume that they both suck! Or I guess I could put that another way. Let's say that they both take in air. That settles it, now I don't need to put my hand down there to feel for air blowing out.
Aloha Russ
Guys,
I tried to have another look when I got home, but at the moment it still gets dark here quite early compared to when I leave work, I maybe wrong about the air-intakes on the UK model, but I have detailed, washed the the car many times and I'm sure I may have noticed it. Lets not put this down to being a difference between UK/Euro/US models just yet.
I am assuming the vents are the same on all models, US or UK, regardless of which hand the drive is on, the left side of the car is engine air intake for the motor, the right hand side is cold air intake for cooling engine compartment. Go check your car and I'm pretty sure that's what you are going to find.
