Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi guys, I'm very close to buying a 996 GT3 Mk II CS. It's a tarmac rally prepared car, with some modifications to suit. Most of these I can live with but one I cannot is the flywheel / clutch. The clutch is aftermarket and is a cushioned button clutch (of some sort) which is a ***** to use. It's grabby and shudders and is a pig for anything but for wheel spin off the line. Not helping this is the flywheel. I'll need to confirm if this was 'upgraded' with the clutch replacement, but in any case I'm told that CSs came with single mass flywheel and the gearboxes at idle chatter away (the car I'm looking at is very loud). So, my question.....The clutch I'm not so concerned about in so much that I just need to get a new one. Expensive but an easy fix. The bit I'm not so sure about is the flywheel. My questions around this are as follows: Can anyone confirm that Mk II CSs definitely came with single mass flywheels? If so can you confirm that this makes the gearbox chatter at idle and light throttle / load? Is it possible to fit a dual mass flywheel to address the chatter? How much would this affect throttle response (if possible) Are there any other issues I should be aware of in doing this (again, if possible) Thanks in advance. Nick.

POST 2Original post

I think you are talking about the 1999-2000 GT3 but as much as I would love to buy one I am not familiar enough with what is stock equipment to comment especially non-U.S. variants. It sounds to me like your solutions are on track & if you search the forum for single mass/ lightweight flywheel info that should help. Don't let it slip away!

POST 3Original post

Hi Nick, The CS and RS have a single mass flywheel. Unless you are making some enormous amount of power you would simply replace the disc with the latest GT3 disc. It has a spring hub, organic material face, offers smooth engagement and still works great for pretty hard use. Using a metallic puck disc is rough on flywheels so it may need replacement as well. Technically, you could go to a dual mass flywheel if you're really trying to quiet this car down but the single mass unit works very well and is less expensive to replace. There would be a change in throttle response if going dual mass.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thansk Don. I've bought the car and hope to have it by weekend. The single mass FW will be staying and a sprung centre organic clutch plate (RSCS) will be going in before delivery. The box should be out some time today so it'll be interesting to see the condition of the FW and the pressure plate. Hopefully both re-usable. With luck this will eliminate the aweful tractability of the old clutch plate and calm down the gearbox chatter, but still give me decent clutch performance and throttle response. Personally I can't see the need for such an extreme clutch plate considering it's a std engine but for an aftermarket exhaust, but each to their own.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
