Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Yes , I did a search and found recommendations to use McLube Sailkote spray on hard surfaces after thorough clean plus Teflon tape (but not clear how and where to put it!

DeMort recommends using Rain X on the edges of the drivers and passenger windows and also on the door seals; using gummi pfledge on the roof and hatch hatch rubbers and KryTox on the hard surrounds.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Good Afternoon Everyone,
I am new to this forum so I apologise if this subject has been raised and answered before!
I have a 2003 996 Targa that I am very proud of , it has done 22000 miles and is in very good condition. If there is one small thing that detracts from my enjoyment it is the roof rattle I experience on less smooth roads and as I live in relative countryside this can be a tad annoying. I have been told it's the cables that operate the sliding roof and "they all do that". Does anyone have a fix or ideas how to dampen the rattle?
Thanks in anticipation, Dave.
Hi
Please do a search on the forum as this was discussed in detail with remedies earlier this year.
Basically some Teflon tape or equivalent needs locating in a few strategic places. Also make sure no dirt under all the rubber seals as that adds to the squeeks and rattles.
Hi Nick,
Yes , I did a search and found recommendations to use McLube Sailkote spray on hard surfaces after thorough clean plus Teflon tape (but not clear how and where to put it! I also searched and found another forum
www.rennlist.com/forums/997/6444279-targa-roof-noise
. Seems to be mainly American based site but the thread was great because of detailed descriptions and photos. See if you can find it but let me know if you have problems.
Not got time at the moment to look at my car but at least have checked that consumables suggested are all available on ebay.
Let me know how you get on, cheers, Dave.
I clean mine with the following and it works really well.
Gummi fledge on soft roof trim and then Mclube on the hard trim stuff.
Go over the whole roof, open and closed, and also the glass hatch lid when open.
I would either apply Sailkote McLube to the leading edge of the deflector (ie where it connects to the glass when the roof is closed) or add some very thin felt or PTFE tape.
There are other bits in that area that can cause rattles too. Again, applying McLube to these will help. You might also want to check the area directly above the sun visors as this can rattle and creak too (will do so with the roof open or closed).
Finally, do NOT use McLube on rubber; instead apply something like Gummi Pfledge, KryTox or Aerospace303 on these.
Hi CDog 996
Thanks for the info
I am new to this not sure or confident of what to do would it be possible to have a phone conversation with you please.
Many thanks

Hi Michael,
Happy to chat sometime but it will be difficult to explain over the phone.
If you’re in the Guildford/Woking area when conditions allow I‘d be happy to meet somewhere and show you the various bits. A lot of it is trial and error as each Targa will have different freaks and squeaks but there are some shared weak points.
I would recommend you read the following two articles:
Firstly, this is the Rennlist thread advocating use of McLube:
https://rennlist.com/forums/997-forum/644279-targa-roof-noise.html
There are some really good tips there along with some pictures with arrows showing the areas of the roof and hatch area to focus on.
The only thing I wouldn’t do from the above is spray/clean/lube the runners for the roof. Advice from the experts (see below) is that while this will initially make your roof cycle quicker it will then attract gunk which will slow it down, ultimately causing it to seize.
There is also a Porsche Indie tech and Targa expert in the UK called ‘DeMort’ who posts on the Pistonheads and 911UK forums. His contributions (there are a plethora of them) are well worth reading.
DeMort recommends using Rain X on the edges of the drivers and passenger windows and also on the door seals; using gummi pfledge on the roof and hatch hatch rubbers and KryTox on the hard surrounds. DeMort also gave me the idea about the area above/behind the sun visors become creaky. See his post here, for further info:
