Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

"inner most' part of inner CV joint, still firmly attached to end of CV axle Hi everyone- Im in the midst of replacing a torn outer CV boot on the front passenger side of my 2003 Carrera 4 S. After reading as much as I could find and watching countless YouTube hours, I decided to tackle this project on my own. So far (and with a lot of patience), things have gone well. But now Im stuck- literally. There are lots of good articles/videos out there on removal of the half axle itself, but Ive seen limited info on when it comes down to removal of the inner CV joint. Ive gotten the outer dust cover off and most of the joint itself off with a bit of help from a hammer and a block of wood; however, the inner most part of the joint remained on the end of the axle/spine when the rest came off- see photo. Before I start wailing on this with a hammer, is there a step I haven't done? Is there anything else that needs to be removed prior to removing this last bit so that I can slide the boots off? Any help would be most greatly appreciated!

POST 2Original post

Hi JH, I am in the middle of replacing the CV boot too. To remove that part (the inner CV connected to the axle via a spline) you first need to remove the circlip. Once the circlip is removed you will need some type of puller, like a 3 jaw 3" puller or similar, that is what I used. They are very cheap, under $20. I don't that I could have removed mine any other way as it was on there very tight. Cheers, Dave

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Dave- thank you for the reply and advice. I removed the circlip already and was able to get the casing and the outer cage (and ball bearings) off. I have seen YouTube videos of the entire joint, including the inner race (looked up some lingo), coming off with some tapping; however, it seems only a jaw puller is going to get this sucker off. Ill make a Harbor Freight run in the morning. Good luck with the rest of your project!

POST 4Original post

Just in case others skip ahead and miss the part about the circlip - make sure you remove that first. Then, as Dave said, get a 3 jaw puller and it will come right off. You can rent them for free from Autozone! That's what I used. Take note of the orientation fo the inner race (the piece you're trying to get off). It has a lip on one side, and is flat on the other. You should put it back on in the same orientation. It will kind of fit on both ways, but not as well one of the two. Cheers Charlie

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Bent end of pliers after one use Asymmetric crimp in band Dave and Charlie- thanks for the help. The inner race came right off with a 3 jaw puller. The most current issue is with the boot clamp, specially the boot clamp pliers that I purchased for the job. On the FIRST clamp is used it on one of the crimpers at the business end of the pliers bent and made this wonky crimp in my band (see photos). Not happy with this autocraft POS. What did you guys use for your clamps? I dont trust the band as it currently is, so I guess Ill order a new one and also look for a different tool. Also, Charlie- your YouTube video on removing the CV axle from the car was a big help and was actually what made me decide to take this project up on my own. Thanks!

Awesome! I'm really happy to hear that the video helped. Regarding band clamp pliers, this is probably an example of where it is worth spending extra and getting a quality tool. I've gotten bit by going cheap on tools in the past, and its always a huge temptation, but usually turns out poorly. I bought these - Amazon Amazon and they worked great. They were $25 when I purchased them, looks like they're about $28 now. Just keep in mind how much money you're saving by doing it yourself, and spending $30 on a tool that you may use just this once is still a great deal. I ordered the boot kits from Pelican parts. They included the boots, bands, and grease. The smaller (inside) boot clamp was painfully short and difficult to get started. Once I had it on, it crimped and worked perfectly though. If you run into trouble getting the first teeth locked by hand, check out my other video - I came up with a solution. Good luck! It looks like you're just about finished up! Cheers Charlie

we are currently working on this now on my 991.1 turbo S, this was indeed the hardest part, and the 3 clamp puller didnt work for us. We had to apply heat to it and then bang on it for a long time with a hammer to get it off. We then filed down all the areas we banged on to make it look pretty again. good luck to anyone that is DIY'ing this job.

POST 8Original post

I have once had to put the contraption in a press, and pressed out the shaft from the CV bit. As for the tool, I always buy good tools now.
