Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Then six weeks later, took it out and the issue was back, but this time it was into or out of 2nf gear.
Leading evidence: 'back' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'back' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Recommend vb' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Its difficult to tell what fixed it, most likely changing the torque converter.
Outcome qualification: Negation, uncertainty or missing explicit repair resolution overrides the raw extraction signal.

Still unsure what to replace, and my tech isnt even fully sure what to replace, hes recommending new VB but also said it could be a TC?

Suggestion
Called the VB shop, and they assured it's under warranty, but when he heard this was my first run after storage he asked that I drive it again the next day and see if it persists.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi All,
My 996 from 1999 was parked for a few weeks and now on first ride started slipping on acceleration in all gears until it gets up to 5 and locks the torque converter.
By slipping I mean the engine revs go up, but the car does not accelerate.
Gears switching nicely from 1 to 5 with manual setting. Fluid levels checked and are correct.
Ive recently changed the fluid (c2000 miles ago, ZF factory fluid spec).
Any troubleshooting ideas what this could be?
Is it as simple as clutch packs suddenly stopped holding - if so which one or all at once?
What to try before dropping box for full rebuild?
is it more the torque converter or the gearbox?
but if gearbox clutches then why did it start slipping in all gears?
attaching few picks from diagnostic tool.
the speed in km/h most certainly incorrect (too low) and the plate angle was probably different between the picks (?).
also had this code on torque converter solenoid clutch, but it did not reappear after reset.
thanks a lot for advise,
jamie
i know this is an old thread now, but did you happen to find out what was wrong with it? my car is doing the same thing in 2nd gear. revs up but doesnt accelerate. i have to be nice and gentle with it when coming off a stopsign or red light. all gears are fine, highway is fine too.
my car is in for a 90k service as we speak. i did trans fluid first last week and it still persisted, desperately looking for answers.
Mine was slipping in all gears and all speeds, so very different symptoms.
Its difficult to tell what fixed it, most likely changing the torque converter. The mechanic fiddled also with some cables in the gearbox but that was unlikely to fix anything
It wasnt as easy as that - the car went through 6 different garages before it got fixed.
The torque converter replacement was around $1.5k to start with. After the job the box was stuck in emergency mode and the mechanic wanted another $5k+ to fix it.
The car then went to 4 different garages who all wanted to do a full rebuild or replacement, which somehow my intuition and inner mechanic didnt believe.
Eventually I was lucky enough to find an honest electrician who fixed a lose electrical connection for less than the others charged for their fraudulent diagnostics 🙈
The whole process took nearly a year and cost around $2k. It made me realise what an annoying hobby owning an old porsche is!
I just went through something [maybe] similar just last fall. Tiptronic, trans flush did nothing. From the advice of one of the regulars here it was suggested it might not be the transmission, and it could be the valve body. I had the valve body pulled and sent to Ream Man in Michigan for a rebuild ($500), and now I'm good as new. One of the solenoid's wasn't pulling the full vacuum to properly shift.
Certainly cheaper than a transmission rebuild.
yeah thats what my tech told me, hes getting a fault code from one of the solenoids. So you think its worth just shipping VB to Michigan and getting it rebuilt? I might just do that.
Just had my tech send me this picture of the fault codes.
Still unsure what to replace, and my tech isnt even fully sure what to replace, hes recommending new VB but also said it could be a TC? is it a solenoid issue? He isnt comfortable working on transmissions so he requesting me send it to a specialist. I cant find a good transmission specialist in the Bay Area. Any one have recommendations?
no I didnt send VB. I ended up finding a used trans with 50k miles and threw it in there. It was too much of a hassle for me to get VB shipped out. Time constraints and lack of storage.
There have been some zf boxes on the marketplace. Id say 1-3k depending on condition miles etc. here’s a link for one for 1500$ I’ve bought several parts from them without issue over the years. I would have a transmission shop that works on zf look at existing one. I saw your thread from earlier in the year. Was the valve body rep, aced and this still persists?

Not exactly. I got this done over the winter, so after I had the VB rebuilt I drove the 150 miles back from the shop and straight to storage. No issue, ran like new.
Then six weeks later, took it out and the issue was back, but this time it was into or out of 2nf gear. Called the VB shop, and they assured it's under warranty, but when he heard this was my first run after storage he asked that I drive it again the next day and see if it persists. Said after the long sit the ECU (or whatever the computer brain for the transmission is called) dropped power and lost some programming, and the fresh charge from driving it and sitting over night should reset it.
And voila! It did. Worked fine. And then I noticed after any storage longer than 2 weeks and the same issue with 2nd gear shift flare appeared but only on the day it comes out of storage, and each time the next day and following days it's fine.
The battery is only three years old, and it never hesitates to start even after weeks of storage (no outlet, no trickle).
Maybe the ECU has an internal battery that needs replacing? Maybe my battery needs replacing? Or maybe it's an ECU reboot issue? I'm past my paygrade now on this one.
hey sorry for the late response.
I paid 2k for the 50k mile trans. I regret not offering less, just to save money, but it runs great so far. Seller originally wanted 2.5k.
Ive listed my old trans for 1k in my local area on Craigslist. Ive explained what the issue is with it, hopefully someone is willing to try and get it back up and running. I just dont have space for storage.
