While replacing my temp/fan switch covers I noticed a loose blue wire near a “going nowhere” orange wire going into this connector.
Should they be connected?
What does that connector connect to?
Is that standard?
Note 3rd party
pioneer
fitted…
Hard to tell exactly what we are looking at, but I think that harness is a pigtail adapter that was fabricated to integrate your
Pioneer
head-unit to the original
Porsche
radio wiring. The OEM radio didn't need an adapter, one side of that connection plugged in to the back of the radio. That same connector (generically called QuadLock I believe) is used in most older German autos. I see your installer used a
BMW
part to fabricate the pigtail.
Some wires, either in the OEM or add-on adapter, might be unused. So that might be the case here.
Pioneer
typically doesn't have an orange wire but they use a yellow for switched 12VDC to trigger the unit on/off. They do have an orange-with-white-stripe wire to toggle the head unit between day/night mode. If that was connected you would see the display change modes when you turned on/off headlights.
I have noticed that sometimes it is hard to distinguish orange from red wires. I think red can fade to appear orange. I also can't tell from the photos which side (male or female) of the connection has the orange wire in question. Knowing that might help figure out where the wire should go.
BTW, I believe the OEM harness had an orange wire for an optional auxiliary audio source input. SO that might be the mystery wire. The main question is whether everything seems to be working as expected. If so, I wouldn't worry.
And to add to
@RSchwerer
excellent answer - there have been available pre-made plug in adaptors for these connectors. In that case the adaptor might be made with every wire ever used on the connector, but in your case - that wire and plug position was never used.. so it appears to go nowhere.
I just noticed that I entirely missed the problem with the blue wire. I can't see where it goes after/above the knot. Looks like it is tied to the OEM antenna connector. That might be a clue. My
Pioneer
installation manual mentions a blue wire:
To auto-antenna relay control terminal. If the vehicle has a glass antenna, connect to the antenna booster power control terminal (max. 300 mA 12 V DC).
So it seems to me that this should be connected. But from memory I can't recall where it goes.
