Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

9 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello! Sold my 987 recently and picked up a 996 yesterday. I noted the passenger side incandescent bulb didn't light but thought, no big deal, I'll replace it. When I got home, many hours and miles later, I found the HID light was now also out and I'd see occasional flickering on. Turn signal works. Is this more likely a switch issue, other wiring, or a coincidental bulb issue? I'm hoping its not the whole assembly ($2500!). Thanks

POST 2Original post

More than likely its the lights wire harness that commonly goes bad in these lights.

thanks. good to know there is a pelican alternative.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

thanks. I suspect you are right but didn't know that was a common fail.

POST 6Original post

I’d take a look through this thread as it could be multiple items. The plastic itself starts to deteriorate in the housing. I found cracks in mine and weirdly the grounds are little metal strips pressed into or screwed on to plastic. These fail and you get all sorts of weird issues. Headlight switch is also a possibility as well as ignition switch. https://rennlist.com/forums/996-turb...the-other.html

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

This is driving me crazy. I replaced the parking incandescent bulb and it is fixed. I replaced the HID bulb and it still doesn't work. I got a new ballast off ebay and replaced it and, eureka, the HID lit right up. Problem solved, I thought. I tried again 15 minutes later and the HID no longer works again. When I turn it on, it flickers a couple times but doesn't light. Its only one side so shouldn't be the ignition or the light switch. Is it the wiring from the ballast to the HID? Why did it light up once then stop? I should note that everything looks dry, clean, and non-corroded. Wiring all looks almost new. Also, just remembered that there is a battery tender set up for charging. I've never used one of these, wonder if it could cause a short.

How do the harness look..? All it takes is 1 or 2 little spots of bare wire to cause intermittent problems....... pics from Adrian's site

POST 9Original post

U also need to check the harness connection and make sure the plug is seated. Pull the wheel liner to get a full view.
