I've done extensive research on the ASK amplifier used in M490 Sound Package Plus, an option in several
Porsche
models, and as standard in S models without
Bose sound system
.
Porsche
part number is 987.645.331.01 / 997.645.331.01 or other. (9xx.645.331.01)
The amps can develop an internal fault caused by a design flaw. The fault can be observed as either no sound at all, (a failing internal power circuit) or abnormal high sound volume on the bass channels.
I've reparied a lot of these, and the repair cost is under half of the spare part price if outside warranty.
Cheers,
Tore
Kudos to Tore for figuring out the problem, working up a redesign, and offering a repair service. I recently sent my amp to Tore which took just 21 days for the round trip from Houston, Texas, to Norway and back by International First Class Mail.
I'm the second owner of a 2007 base model
Boxster
with the Sound Package Plus, and for a while just assumed that the system was what it was - not very good. One day I discovered that the fuse for the ASK amplifier was missing from the fuse panel, which made me wonder how there was any sound coming from the speakers at all.
Researching this forum I learned that the ASK only drives the bass speakers in the doors, plus the center dash speaker. With the radio turned on I inserted a fuse and for about two seconds heard glorious sound. It then turned to a very loud hum and I quickly pulled the fuse back out. An email to Tore confirmed that this is one of several known failure modes for the ASK. I'm now enjoying the sound system the way it was supposed to be - not bad at all for a roadster - and was motivated to burn some MP3 CD's for long trips.

Thanks for the post I have the same fault. Glad to know I am not alone and it is a known fault
I have one of these amplifiers, removed from my
2007 Cayman S
if anyone is interested - $100.
Are you still doing this fix?
Do you still have the amp?
Tore is apparently still doing the repairs. Here is the

I just got my repaired amp back from Tore, and it works perfectly. I really appreciated finding this thread, so thanks to the also for starting this years back. At some point I'll post some pics of the amp removal process--not that it is hard, but a few images would likely help the clueless like me to get the job done quicker
