Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I still have an 18 foot runabout walk-though windshield fiberglass boat that has a inboard-outboard venerable "Pinto" 4 cyl engine with points ignition...It wouldn't start this summer so I cleaned the points with sandpaper and fired it up !!
Leading evidence: 'Clean points' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'these ideas have been around' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean points' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Boy, I miss the old days when I used cigarette paper from an old Marlboro box to set the points on my old 356 distributor and the garden hose to listen to all the drama of that old air-cooled motor.

I suspect these ideas have been around for a long time - even an electrically-spooled turbocharger was something I dreamt up back in the 1990s as a kid.

its just another place to put the starter which is now multi function as a torque fill motor as well.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

But its not a 996 this time
It's Official: Porsche's Gas-Powered Boxster, Cayman to Leave Production in 2025
Less ICE, more EVs. Just makes the 996 look even better.
I cant imagine the EV-based 718 is going to be light weight like they used to be, or anything close to a 996.
The NEW 2025 911 GTS Hybrid has no alternator belt, no power steering belt, no belts period,.... and No Starter !! , But it does have an electric Turbocharger !!
The electric Hybrid motor adds 110ft/lbs of torque and also serves as the starter motor...The battery is the same size as always but is a 400 volt system !! ...It's definitely "High Tech", but it is just too high tech even for me ....

Intentional. I wanted folks to see that and immediately think it was a failed 996.
Besides, you stole it from John Deacon, bassist from Queen.
In any event, it caused me to go back to your thread - thats a classic thread on RL now.

I'd be willing to bet that the price of ballpoint pens will reach astronomical heights when people start writing checks to the dealership for their repairs. After all, we are talking about a high-voltage battery up front, a pulse inverter and DG-DC converter mounted on top of the engine, and an electric motor mounted inside the transmission, not to mention all of those rubber hoses.....what could go wrong?...... Boy, I miss the old days when I used cigarette paper from an old Marlboro box to set the points on my old 356 distributor and the garden hose to listen to all the drama of that old air-cooled motor. I admit I'm spoiled with my 996 with air conditioning......but at least it's not an entire nightmare to work on in my own garage!
I dont think the new 911 hybrid system is going to be hugely problematic to repair and all that. Battery tech will get better over time, and the EM in the trans is probably not going to break. The electric turbo might be the biggest element. Everything else is just software and standard stuff.
Id rather the 718 be a hybrid than go all electric.
The beauty is that this is going to be a legit, 'lower budget' Electric Supercar. The only other real EV supercar is the Rimac Nevera and the "I SWEAR ONE DAY ITS COMING" Telsa Roadster...
I cant think of any others...
I just hope the rodents don't like the taste of the millions of wires on these new fancy EV/Hybrid cars.
I've repaired one wire harness from rodent damage this summer and have to do another vehicle where they chewed into the fuel lines.
Right !! I still have an 18 foot runabout walk-though windshield fiberglass boat that has a inboard-outboard venerable "Pinto" 4 cyl engine with points ignition...It wouldn't start this summer so I cleaned the points with sandpaper and fired it up !! lol ...My Daughter and her husband wanted it for fun with the Grandkids so I am giving it to them to enjoy.. I am just getting to old to use it often, but they can enjoy it for a long time for very little cost in maintenance/repairs..
When i heard the details, on a podcast , i was like nah hes mistaken, it has to have a starter motor for the engine, then as i'm driving i'm thinking, electric motor in the PDK serves to jump start the ICE... i was like dammit, they are some clever boys at Porsche, why did no one else think of this... no accessory belt, electric AC can run with the engine off, wow the weight saving of the reduced accessories and pulleys and belt offsets the extra weight of the electric motor... and as i write i'm thinking they must put the PDK in Neutral when they use the motor to start the ICE, so it not really a bump start... its just another place to put the starter which is now multi function as a torque fill motor as well.
I have to say its impressive... i wonder how they drive the dizzy and open the points to make spark....lol
Not sure if its the same but jeep uses an electric motor in the bellhousing for its 4xe line. I think it starts the motor for the "autostart" but im not sure if it is the primary on their hybrid?
The idea is awesome for sure, but its 5% of the solution. I suspect these ideas have been around for a long time - even an electrically-spooled turbocharger was something I dreamt up back in the 1990s as a kid. I think some engineers actually created superchargers and turbochargers on the same engine. Other makes and models have no starter motor and use generators in place of alternators.
Its the engineering thats so impressive.
Porsche had to make this work in a profitable way while retaining the goodness of the 911. And they had to combine all this tech into a lightweight package thats also reliable.
