The switch to roll up the window on the driver’s side (left side) of my 2005
987.1
is very intermittent. The window rolls down 100% of the time but it often takes several tries to roll it back up. Passenger side works fine.
Is this simply a matter of replacing the switch itself, or is there something more nefarious (and expensive) at work?
Do you have a bi-directional Porsche diagnostics/code tool? If so - it probably has a function allowing you to (1) monitor the "state" of the switch - on/off - it might be useful to find an intermittent, and it (2) undoubtedly has functions allowing you to activate things in the car - like the power windows. If it activates smoothly, not intermittently - using the diagnostics tool, that would tend to make me think "switch"...
Or you can just throw parts at it and hope you find what's wrong fairly quickly. The failed part will always be the last one you replace - but it can be an expensive path to get to that part without a diagnostics tool.
I do indeed have such a tool.

- I say this particularly as I'm drinking my morning coffee.
I've had stuff like this happen to me before (I think), and I'm guessing it's the switch that may need either an internal cleaning or a replacement.
I think if you press it lightly, it will move while pressed down... but if you press it hard, it should move up/down automatically. Mine was a little flaky with the latter, and I think I swapped out the entire switch in my 981 and cleaned the switch in my 987.2 (not perfect, but improved). Also make sure you do the window switch reset procedure before you do anything else.
Yes, a PIWIS is amazing to diagnose fiddly stuff like this.
Let us know how you get on with this.
Wonderful - awaiting results..
Your instincts were correct: it’s the switch and not the controller. My diagnostic scanner showed the switch was flaky but it had no trouble raising or lowering the window under software control.

Don't know if it's possible on these models but on the 944 it was a simple matter to disassemble the switch and clean the contacts.
