Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Paul Walker dies at 40 in a fiery CGT crash http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-25173331

POST 5Original post

wow, very sad news. Looks like a horrific rash.

POST 6Original post

He was a real petrol head and did loads for charity. Very sad but I guess he died doing what he loved.

POST 8Original post

It can be a tricky car to drive, but I would not have called it dangerous. It the kind of car that needs respect and warm tires though. My impression is that sometimes people jump in on cold rubber and let the thing rip. I have no idea of the circumstances in this case, but having driven a CGT fairly hard, (but not at the level of a professional driver), I found it to be a very exciting ,communicative car. Very sad news about the driver and passenger.

POST 9Original post

We dont know the actual cause yet, and of course may never do. It could be a puncture or something else that the driver had no control of.

This ^ Irrespective of the how's and why's, it's a tragic waste of a life. I think it fair to say they may have a bit of a reputation. Herr Rohrl said it was "tricky on the limit". He had some fairly big moments during testing. I seem to remember he might have written one/two ? off whilst testing ? (a quick search on Google seems to confirm this) If Rohrl can pilot a 680hp S1 Quattro up Pikes Peak in under 11 minutes (42 seconds onwards) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8AzQolK_84 and drive basically the same car over the French Alps, often on sheet ice, during the 1986 Monte Carlo rally (won it four times, each time in different cars) (44 seconds onwards) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zpIYZUcADA0 you can rest assured, that if he says they're "tricky on the limit", they are.

Does the car have any handling control systems like PSM?

POST 12Original post

Bet it did not have pilot super sports fitted.

POST 15Original post

mollytherocker said: Ok thanks, thats what I thought. Last of a kind then. Second last. Last was the 997.1RS..already in production when the California lawsuit was decided. A guy went out on a track with a CGT and he and his passenger were killed in a track day. No mechanical failures. Jury found many people liable including Porsche ( minor participant...$300k fine), but it set the direction and now all cars have stability control.

POST 16Original post

Shocked & really sad to hear that both Paul Walker & the driver had passed away .Terrible news for both families to bear . When I found out they died whilst driving/riding in a GT Carrera I could only help but think that maybe the GT Carrera should now take from the GT2's mantle the notorious ' Widowmaker' name ?

POST 17Original post

In two minds on whether to enter this debate, but probably worth mentioning that several on here have driven CGTs many thousand miles without incident. It's true that they can be snappy on the limit (on the sport, not supersport tyres) and you definitely have be awake to catch it. I'd question whether a public road is the place to find that limit, but it's tragic nonetheless. From the pictures I saw at the weekend, the impact must have been pretty heavy, and I'm dubious whether any sort of electronic safety net could have caught it. Overused term, widowmaker.

Does anyone have any info on the driver of the GT. Someone at work has said he was a pro driver?

The catching fire bit is horrific. Thought most cars these days had systems and set ups to prevent this, especially £300,000 Porsches. Saw a picture showing a lamp post or some pole still standing with the main cockpit of the car breached by it. I'd imagine that the mid engined car had very little in front to prevent something like this happening. Very sad.

Capable, but not perfect. Human. Nobody knows what caused the accident still, despite there being great big tyre marks on the road. The marks would determine speed, mechanical failure/puncture etc. Any car is simply a tool. It only goes fast if you make it go fast.

POST 25Original post

Allegedly a third of the 1499 made have been involved in an accident and when Porsche sold to the first owners apparently made you sign a disclaimer. Interestingly PSM was available as retrofit.

Interestingly PSM was available as retrofit. There were 1270 made not 1499.... and I flatly do not believe a third of all the GTs made had an accident. Nor have I heard of anyone retrofitting PSM to the car either to be honest, you have a link on a car done that way?

POST 27Original post

Wrote a article on the CGT a while back, will try to dig out sources. I've heard 1270 and 1250 too. For me the interesting points were that a tiptronic version had been made for Wiedeking and the engine designer also did the 63 for Merc. Edited by Callughan on Sunday 8th December 00:32

POST 28Original post

Really sad about Paul Walker, RIP. Tiptronic would have been nice as it's a pig to get off the line. Also it has a ceramic clutch which is easily damaged if you drop it incorrectly. I've driven one many times as my boss owns one and I get to drive it around the south of France on occasion. My boss scratched all the side of his but only because it's so wide and he drove it down a narrow street!

If you'd ever driven it you'd know what I'm talking about, they are like nothing I've ever driven, and I've owned four Porsches myself.

POST 32Original post

A "normal" clutch would have been sensible. It's a royal PITA to drive on the road.

POST 33Original post

Alpinestars said: A "normal" clutch would have been sensible. It's a royal PITA to drive on the road. It is a bit of a pain i admit and definitely needs more concentration from a standing start than should be ideal but after some getting used to it, I thought it was acceptable. How much of the driving experience of the cgt would be lost with a 'normal' clutch though is harder to objectively define I guess as to whether it is worth the trouble.
