Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Sorry its a 99 with about 48,000 miles-clutch itself feels perfect-so does the box have to come out to repair the throw out bearing?

Can someone please tell me if I can change the Clutch by removing the Gearbox from underneath, leaving the engine in situ.

Some folks would replace the IMS bearing with the LNS engineering upgrade at this time.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi All,
Went for a short drive-stopped for a coffee-drove off and noticed a "whistle/whine"( bearing of some sort) when upshifting. No ongoing noise when in gear/motion. I then stopped and put the car in neutral and no noise. Pushed pedal in- chatter/whining noise-different than upshifting noise. No problems with engaging gears at all-just noises. Any ideas would be welcomed!
Thanks,
Jason
Box has to come out. May be the time to replace clutch parts. Check the dual mass flywheel also.

I know that the Clutch on my 1999 C4 is just about finished. I have decided it does need a change, and I expect to change the RMS at the same time. Can someone please tell me if I can change the Clutch by removing the Gearbox from underneath, leaving the engine in situ. Or do I have to remove the whole unit as is the case with earlier 911's.
I have access to a workshop with a ramp and all the kit and have a fair amount of experience but do not want to start on it one way and then find I have to go back to square one anyway.
LN Engineering - Makes a ceramic bearing replacement/upgrade intermediate shaft bearing. Tons of posts on this. While you're doing the clutch, it would be advisable to upgrade the IMS bearing. Labor is virtually nil while the clutch is being done. IMS bearing Notoriously weak link that will take out the motor if it goes.
