Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

9 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi everyone, This car is new to me I'm still in the revealing process. 2004 manual 2WD Carrera with 117K. A recent engine refresh (4,000km ago) What I'm finding is once the engine is warm and you pick up the throttle (either from off throttle or slight throttle maintaining speed) slightly to perhaps add 3-5kph the car will, 70% of the time, have a hesitation. There's no sound / knock or anything. Hesitation or flat spot. I wouldn't call it a miss. I also don't think it is drive train slap. it also occurs when cruise control is set and the car starts an incline the cruise will pick up the throttle to return the car to the set speed it will do this flat spot / hesitation. Any ideas? All I've got is throwing a bottle of redline fuel cleaner through it. Cheers Justin (Sydney, AU)

POST 2Original post

What fuel are you using, and when were the spark plugs last replaced?

POST 3Original post

In the 3.6, there is a variocam hesitation at ~3k rpm. Just a quirk of the system. Google porsche 996 variocam hesitation and you will find plenty of info.

POST 4Original post

This sounds like vacuum leak. My car (99 C2) did the same thing once when the mechanic left on of the air boots between the plenum and head off center a bit.

In Australia I always use 98 RON. Not sure how that compares to other countries but it is the highest rated pump fuel available. Sparkies - 2023 - around 5,000km ago (Previous owner)

Thanks - I'll note that as wasn't aware. I think I'm feeling it anywhere from 1200-2500. Today was its first major squirt (for me) and there was nothing when stretching its legs (2nd/3rd gear all morning) Only seems to occur once hot and only crusing.

Yeah, this is a possibility. Justin, smoke test your intake for any leaks. Another possibility is the MAF. Drive around with the MAF unplugged and see if theres a difference.

POST 8Original post

I'm with beermanpete and 996love on the vacuum leak. So much so I would only unplug the MAF after fixing any air leaks you find. 98 RON is perfect.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks - Its off for a full suspension refresh next week. so I'm guess I'm adding to the list this and full brake bleed (feels a little soft / some travel at the top before there's any bite.
