Read evidence and context

Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Did an oil change today and found these small fragments in my oil filter. Are these signs of bore scoring? Mine is a 99 with the original IMS.

POST 2Original post

I don't think so, but grab a magnet and see if they stick to it. Then report back.

POST 3Original post

Timing Chain Guide material. They are 25 years old after all and the plastic portion of the guide that makes contact with chain deteriorates with age and use. You could just continue to monitor the condition at next oil change, but I would drop the oil sump pan and see if there are larger pieces present. Good luck.

How long have you owned the car, have you ever seen anything in previous oil changes? If you have not I would drop the sump plate and inspect it for larger pieces. If you find larger pieces plan on changing the chain pads sooner than later.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
