Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Then again, the engine in my car was replaced at 70,000 kilometres, so my motor won't have that kind of mileage for another 9 years or so.
Leading evidence: 'Replace then again, the engine in my car' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'good one' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check coolant smell, could need a coolant expansion tank, step' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suspected cause
That Pasha fellow (sp?) did a teardown of a M96 motor some time ago and the normal wear areas/surfaces looked really good IIRC, so if the motor has done that many miles it's probably a good one.

Suggestion
Also check for coolant smell, could need a coolant expansion tank, step on the clutch before you start it a bunch to see if it feels heavy.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Not mine. I ran across this, and I'm just passing it along. Higher miles, but sounds nice though!

Wayne,
From your research with your boxster, do you think the engine or transmission is something to worry about if currently it is running well at those miles? If the IMS or cylinders were to fail, they would have already right?
Thanks
175,000 miles and running strong. That's impressive. Problems with these motors usually show up early, if they show up at all. That Pasha fellow (sp?) did a teardown of a M96 motor some time ago and the normal wear areas/surfaces looked really good IIRC, so if the motor has done that many miles it's probably a good one. Mind you it's entirely possible the motor in that car was replaced at some point. A lot of them were, especially the early early ones.
I have 147,000 kilometres on my MkII 996 and I do 25,000 per year, so I will have this kind of mileage on my car about in about five and a half years. Then again, the engine in my car was replaced at 70,000 kilometres, so my motor won't have that kind of mileage for another 9 years or so. I like the sounds of that actually. My car is great and at this point I will be happy to own and drive it for another 10 years.
Keep up with the routine maintenance and the cars really show how well they are built. Even at 8 years old and with as many miles as I have my car is like new in many ways.
Good price. Take it for a test drive, make sure you drive the car in 2nd gear on an incline up and down hill. As you go up or downhill tale your foot of the throttle over and over to see if the gear pops out. If it does...$$$$$ But it's not so bad you can still drive her. Also check for coolant smell, could need a coolant expansion tank, step on the clutch before you start it a bunch to see if it feels heavy. Could need a new clutch accumulator, look at the window seals well, could need replacing. Check to see if there are any codes being thrown at an indie mechanic that specialize I'm Porsche and can hook it up to a computer that reads codes. Good luck!
>> If it does...$$$$$
$3000 on ebay for a rebuit Getrag.
Then add a 3.6 rebuilt engine ($7000) and you have a very reliable and fast car for $23K ! Add a GT3 Aerokit and you'll a $25K car with GT3 p/w and the looks to match.
