But before I put in the new center console, I replaced the original shifter with a 997 shifter with the FF Shift Right kit.

Ive used Carbonlution with varying degrees of satisfaction.

Lastly, I am replacing my old blue Sabelt harnesses with a new set of black Sabelt Enduro harnesses.

Just like you I picked up an extra console on ebay and then did the sanding, primer and wet sanding myself using AutomotiveTouchup stuff.

I figure I can use the black with silver weave carbon fiber on the horse shoe and air vents, coupled with a seal gray painted center console with black leather pads and shifter to pull the graphite grey dash and seats together with the black bits around the interior together to make it work.

In my case, I am trying to tie in a graphite grey interior with a seal gray painted center console using black leather bits with carbon fiber horseshoe.

My project was to remove the original graphite grey center console and replace it with seal grey painted center console while using carbon fiber to tie in the graphite grey interior with the seal grey painted center console and black leather bits.

Would appreciate you thoughts on the quality and look of MA Carbon, DB Carbon or Carbonlution parts.
My wife asked me what I wanted for Xmas so I said a carbon fiber horseshoe and carbon fiber air vents. So the next step is figuring out which company to go with.
Anybody have first hand experience with any of these companies and thoughts on the quality and look of their work?
DB Carbon. MA carbon is great too, but I chose DB Carbon, due to price at the time. Daniel is great to work with. Good pricing. High quality. He has about an eight week + lead time. I bought my center console from him in my 997 and also dash pieces. No complaints after 2+ years installed. I'm incredibly picky too.
Ive used Carbonlution with varying degrees of satisfaction. The carbon fiber weave is good but several of my pieces, like my inside door sills, have poor solid painted areas. My triangular window trim bits had dried glue on the leading edges. Good pricing but inconsistent on quality control. My MACarbon instrument surround is quite nice.
Thanks guys. Appreciate the insight.
Sounds like Carbonlution may be hit or miss for interior parts. DB and MA seem to be the favorites with DB being a bit cheaper than MA as well as the ability to keep the original part as a JIC.
I do hope that Rennline continues to develop their carbon fiber parts program for interior parts and expands to horseshoes and air vents. But looks like it's between DB and MA at this stage and I will probably go with DB to keep my original parts.
I am in the process of painting an ebay center console seal gray and and adding the black leather console bits (pads) to it to help break up the sea of gray. A carbon horseshoe and air vents will probably help to tie it in, but wont know until its done. Sounds take a 6-8 weeks for the carbon bits to arrive.
Here is what it looks like currently before the changes. When I get it finished I'll post the after pictures. Gotta settle on a new set of racing harnesses as well. May have to go with black to help tie it in. Got some time to figure it out.
I'm sure this is obvious, but you can always buy parts off eBay to use as your core returns if you want to keep your old ones and go with MA Carbon. But as mentioned, I can't speak highly enough of DB Carbon and their work. In an age when communication, especially in the car world, always seems to be a struggle, Daniel met and exceeded my communication expectations.
Side note, those gray GT3 buckets look great!
Thanks for your comments on the GT3 seats. They have been awesome seats over the past 16+years. Believe it or not, very comfortable. Funny how excited folks get about sitting in the car with the seats and harnesses. However, I got a couple of buddies that won't get in the seat because they are afraid they won't get out.
Yeah, I pretty much have picked up a second set of everything on ebay for this project. Been wrestling with what to do with the center console for 20 years. With the help of all of the 996 interior projects posted on RL, I am hoping I figured it out.
Looking to replace and/or cover the silver interior trim with carbon fiber. Does anyone make replacements, specifically for the silver trim (that houses the ambient light) on the door panels, the silver trim along the dash under the infotainment screen, and around the shifter/console. Thanks!
FYI, I didn't realize that the Porsche factory black carbon fiber has a golden brown weave/hue to it. I was purchasing leather trim pieces from DC Auto in NC a week ago and picked up a factory OEM carbon fiber horse-shoe they had that fits my 996.2. It looks great and will go well with a black or brown interior, but it doesn't match a graphite grey interior as well. I just sent it back to DC Auto if anyone needs one. Ask for Randy. See picture below.
OEM
So I then talked to DB Carbon and they confirmed that their black carbon fiber has a silver weave and will match a graphite grey interior extremely well. I'll know for sure in 2 months when the horse shoe arrives. If it matches I will then purchase the side air vents. See picture below.
DB Carbon
It's a used oem one that I got from DC Automotive. Dont know if its 22 years old and original to the 996.2 it came off off or was purchased new from Porsche a few years ago.
Don't know if the golden brown weave/hue comes from age or the factory by design. It's really a beautiful weave with a great color and hue.
Quite frankly i have always loved carbon fiber but never really paid attention to the variations in weave, color and hue until now as I make minor changes and enhancements to the interior that hopefully work with graphite gray.
I figure I can use the black with silver weave carbon fiber on the horse shoe and air vents, coupled with a seal gray painted center console with black leather pads and shifter to pull the graphite grey dash and seats together with the black bits around the interior together to make it work. Maybe, maybe not.
I don't have one ounce of artistic creativity in my body so it will be trial and error.
I like how you are thinking. we are on the same path with the body color painted center console and black leather center console pads and black shifter leather. I haven't figured out the stick shift handle yet either. Won't become clear until all the other parts are in. It's only taken me 22 years of ownership to figure out what to do. If it takes a few more months or years to get it right, no worries.
Joel, your carbon fiber and interior look incredible. Those of us with a graphite gray interior have to work a little harder to pull things together and get them to match. But the good news is it's doable.
Ok that makes sense. Unless it was protected somehow(clear coated or PPF), itll eventually yellow a little. Best bet is to get as many as you can at one time and theyll age at the same speed like mine did.
Perfect time to upgrade that worn out shifter since youre pulling the center console.
I might know someone who has a practically new 997 shifter with the Function First shift kit installed.
Will do Joel. Got a bunch of projects going on inside and out that i have been collecting things for the last couple of years. Give me a few months and i will have an idea of what I have sitting on the shelves after I get some of these projects finished.
I hear you. I am trying to get another couple of years out of mine before taking the plunge again. Looking forward to hearing about and seeing the final set-up when it's done.
I was looking to pair a CF Horseshoe with the Rennline GT3 center console delete I got and during the research it looks like the 99 has its own which I'm assuming this is because of the cupholders, or is it something else?... Does this mean I can add the cupholder if I buy a 02-04 version, or am I stuck buying the 99 only which is only offered by MA Carbon?

Anyone know?
If I understand your question, the horse shoes are different on the 996.1 than 996.2. So the 996.2 horse shoe and cup holder wouldn't work on the 996.1. Don't know about differences between center console deletes and/or cup holders that may attach to them. Hopefully someone has a better answer for you.
Realize this is a slightly different question, but does anyone know where I might find the horseshoe trim piece in black leather?
I’m quite fond of the full leather look… I have full leather interior, but would like to have the horseshoe also covered.
I have seen them on ebay from time to time. You can also try DC Automotive in NC and LA Dismantler which have a large supply of Porsches. In many cases its a persistent timing exercise.
I think the leather horseshoe is a nice piece but OEM carbon is rare and it probably has to do with the price. Ive only seen a couple full carbon cars other than mine but there are several guys locally who have full leather options.
The leather looks good. So does the carbon fiber. Depends on the look you are going for. Hopefully by January I will receive my DB Carbon horseshoe black w/silver weave to see what it looks like in person. I'll post pictures so we can compare to the oem carbon horseshoe weave.
In my case, I am trying to tie in a graphite grey interior with a seal gray painted center console using black leather bits with carbon fiber horseshoe. Hoping the black/silver carbon does it.
Pictures of center console recently sanded, primed and then painted.
That looks pretty good! I have a spare center console that I've stripped of rubbery coating and sanded. I bought a leather hide to cover it, a winter project, but I keep thinking I should try painting it body color first. Your picture has me leaning in that direction.
Yeah, I wrestled with what to do with it over the past 22 years. So i did nothing. Decided to paint it the same color as the exterior with extra coats of lacquer to make sure it was durable.
Just like you I picked up an extra console on ebay and then did the sanding, primer and wet sanding myself using AutomotiveTouchup stuff. Realized that I didn't have the skill set to spray it with confidence so I handed it off to my indy which has a body/spray segment to their business since they are always working on race cars. It came out perfect.
Biggest challenge as I mentioned in previous posts was how to tie it in to a graphite grey interior with black leather and carbon fiber.
Below is a picture of the spayed console with black and grey leather bits sitting next to it for comparison. I decided on the black leather since i will have new black sabelt harnesses, black carbon fiber horseshoe and plenty of other black bits that break up the sea of gray. As you can see, I am in the process of treating the leather with Leatherique.
My current car has CF: entire hood and roof, drive shaft and CF all over the interior including part of the steering wheel, and all the real CF came with the car at no extra cost. So I couldn't justify paying $1500 for four little interior pieces of CF for the C8. If the trim pieces under the vents and the screen also came in CF, I would have considered it.
Yeah, CF is very expensive. I am starting small and will decide how much to add as I look at it for awhile. I don't want overkill, just want to break up the sea of grey and tie in black and grey to make it work. I've had the car for 22 years so I have plenty of time to figure it out.
Got a little work done on the car with the warm weather the last few days. My project was to remove the original graphite grey center console and replace it with seal grey painted center console while using carbon fiber to tie in the graphite grey interior with the seal grey painted center console and black leather bits.
But before I put in the new center console, I replaced the original shifter with a 997 shifter with the FF Shift Right kit. A very big thanks to
@philbert996
for selling me the shifter. I gotta say that it is a huge improvement from the original shifter. It has a slightly shorter throw than original, but its certainly not a short shift kit. Imho, it's the right throw length. It's also tighter and eliminates the slop. I spend the evening putting the shifter thru its paces trying to miss a shift and couldn't get any failures. It's an excellent upgrade.
I then installed the newly painted seal grey center console. It looks great. The black track mats amd black leather console bits tie in the seal grey with graphite gey and it looks good. Still have to finish painting the emergency brake handle plastic piece that sits on top of the mid/bottom portion of the handle, but if the weather permits this week, I should have it painted and added to the handle.
Still wating on the DB Carbon horse shoe which should further tie in the seal grey, graphite grey and black. It should look pretty good.
Lastly, I am replacing my old blue Sabelt harnesses with a new set of black Sabelt Enduro harnesses. Should have them in a few weeks.
I'll take a few more pictures when the carbon horse shoe and racing harnesses arrive and are installed. But the sea of grey has further disappeared and the interior looks good as new.
I had some luck and found a new old stock OEM horse shoe for mine, carbon really helps to step up the interior of the 996
I have the Rennline door kit and I got my center console from DB Carbon. Everything matches the OEM very well
