Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I am on a mission to determine whether the engine has been replaced, (it was not under warranty), so I also need to somehow find out what the # would be for an extremely early production '99.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

9 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Does anyone know where I look for the engine serial# on my '99 996? I am on a mission to determine whether the engine has been replaced, (it was not under warranty), so I also need to somehow find out what the # would be for an extremely early production '99. (Build date 2/98). If my # is not consistent with that, I'll know it's been changed. TIA.

the engine number should be stamped on the underside of the crankcase

AT in front of the serial number. This means Austauschmotor or exchange motor. You have a factory rebuilt normally aspirated motor for a 1999 (66X) 66Y is 2000 661 through 665 is 2001 through 2005 respectively Last 5 digits are the serial number
