Suggestion
In addition to the above I am now using my 2nd key r/c which unfortunately isn’t saving the memory seat position despite trying several times including clearing the key memory first as per the instructions in the manual.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

porsche 911 996 targa 2002
i have 2 keys with remote fobs (3 buttons on the targa) - both are used regularly
on one of them the battery ran out - the red led flashed but very faint and the remote did not unlock the car
i replaced the battery (i have done this before successfully) and now when i press to unlock then the red led on the fob
lights up bright but just once (rather than rapid flash) and does not unlock the car
any ideas ?
thanks - the key itself works fine its just the remote fob
Porsche did a technical bulletin about replacing the key battery, and re-starting the processor by reversing the coin cell. Here it is, but I have to say that I have only heard of it fixing the problem a couple of times.

hi, had similar problem, did everything, even wasted 70 pounds refurb the key, only answer, new fob and resinc in porsche , dont waste time and money like me. regards elwyn
Sounds like the battery didn't run out and more likely the fob just died as they do all too often (thanks Porsche)
Lots of Boxster owners have just bought after market central locking units and wired into the doors contacts as a way of having a reliable cheap fob replacement.
Brief write up here and the kits normally tell you where to splice into:

MY97 Australian delivered car. Has driver side and passenger side keyholes. Has central locking. No remote. No alarm.
I just installed an aftermarket alarm/remote/proximity entry unit. I will write up a
DIY
if there is enough interest but I believe most people from the US would have the remote feature as standard. Come to think of it, there is probably not much to write. Everything you need to know is below:
1. Everything can be hooked up under the passenger seat (RHD car) except the ACC ON signal, so remove the seat first (4 screws)
2. A Bentley manual or a wiring diagram from the factory manual is an absolute must, and contains all the necessary information to figure out which wires to splice into.
3. The door motors are negatively triggered
4. The door open trigger is labelled "door contact" on the wiring diagrams. I am unsure the difference between this and "door safe" - which also appear on the wiring diagram.
5. The door open signal is negatively triggered.
6. There is a separate trigger for "door contact" (door open) for each door, and there appears to be no combined signal. You might need an additional relay if you want your alarm unit to be triggered when either door is opened.
7. Unlock signal is labelled "unprime", and a single connection would unlock both doors.
8. A single lock signal would lock both doors.
9. The wire colours for a RHD car are: Red/Brown (thick) = 12V, Brown/Red (thin) = motor to open door, Brown/White = motor to close door, Brown/Green = (RHD) driver door status (closed), or LHD passenger door status; Turn signals = Black/White, Black/Green
10. Don't splice into the dash central locking switch (inside handle not secured), use the direct connections to the motors above

Remember this is not over riding the OEM alarm system its just utilising your RFid pill for the immobiliser and energising your door locks.
There are more detailed posts around if you search.

Hi there
I’m having a similar key fob issue with one of my r/c’s.
The fob was slowly getting to the point that I needed to be closer to the car until it stopped working altogether.
I changed the battery as I’ve done before and now it doesn’t work at all. LED lights brightly when pushing buttons as it should. Key works fine in the door.
Have tried re-booting the processor per Porsche technical guide found in forum but not made a difference.
In addition to the above I am now using my 2nd key r/c which unfortunately isn’t saving the memory seat position despite trying several times including clearing the key memory first as per the instructions in the manual. Instead it moves the seat right bank when I unlock the car with this key.
So now left with 1 r/c that doesn’t unlock the car and the other r/c that does but moves the seat to an incorrect position when so doing.
Any ideas to resolve both issues would really be appreciated...
