I've spent hours searching through exhaust upgrades and DIY solutions for these cars and most end up saying they still don't give the noise that the owner wants. All the current mods involve rerouting exhaust gas back into the chamber either through a larger diameter pipe or a solid pipe instead of a perforated.
What if after the valve instead of going back into the muffler, the pipe was just dumped? I'm aware this will no doubt be quite loud but I don't want to affect the
PSE
off option for when my wife drives the car. Definitely going to turn Sport mode into a his/hers option.
Also at this stage the exhaust system is 17 years old so even if I am happy with these results I'll be upgrading it in the not too distant future anyway.

That's a rather direct approach to solving the volume problem, and you're not wrong in your thinking. What you're describing is essentially a switchable muffler bypass, sometimes called an "exhaust cutout," integrated with the factory PSE button. It's a well-trodden path in the world of modification.
With the valves closed, your car would behave exactly as it does now, preserving the peace and the "hers" setting on your newly designated switch. When you open the valves, however, you'd be introducing the full, un-muffled sound of the flat-six directly to the atmosphere. It would be, to put it mildly, monumentally loud. Think less "aggressive exhaust note" and more "race car exiting the pit lane."
There are a few practicalities to consider with this setup. The first is drone, which would likely be significant at cruising speeds, as there's no muffler to manage those resonant frequencies. Second, dumping hot exhaust gases directly under the car can lead to soot on the bumper and the potential for fumes to enter the cabin when stationary. Lastly, your local vehicle inspector may take a very keen, and not entirely positive, interest in the modification. It's an effective way to create a true Jekyll-and-Hyde personality for your car, but you might find that Mr. Hyde is a bit too rowdy for regular visits.
Exhaust are a crazy subject on these cars... I have worked on muscle cars for years and a 3" custom exhaust for a muscle car might cost oh 2k! and that goes from the front to the back like 15ft. On the other hand the
Porsche
exhaust is compact and not huge or long but for some reason they want 6k for it! I don't get it. SO I cut my cats apart and removed the crap and welded um back up and added mini cats on the 2nd O2 sensor. Then bought a SS Chinese system for $700. I am very happy with how it sounds and I add some killer tips. I say save your money for more important things like coil overs.
