Suggestion

On the 996 if flat battery unlock car with key you can use slave battery to release frunk and engine cover, jump leads to footwell fuse box special connecter in there that you pull out ,and other jump cable to drivers door frame latch.then elec release buttons will work as normal

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Dear all, Whilst giving the car a good clean today I noticed a ring pull which is attached to a cable that lives between the drivers side door and the inner wing. Can anyone tell me its purpose, there's no mention of it in the manual. I think I have attached a photograph to show it. Kind regards Gerry

POST 2Original post

I’ve got one of those. I think it let’s you open the frunk if the battery is flat but hopefully Richard or a n other expert will be along soon to confirm or deny.

POST 3Original post

There is one at the rear, behind the rear lights, for the engine compartment to be open in case of flat battery (but you have to have the engine open, to get to the screws to remover the lights, but hey), so would assume, as above, this is the same thing for the front

POST 4Original post

Its the release for the fuel filler cover [:-]

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all, My fuel filler cover locks and unlocks with the central locking. I'm assuming that this lever allows you to override that if the central locking packs up or the battery dies? Cheers Gerry

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Cheers Andy, Are there any other levers etc hidden away on a 996 that perform similar functions? Are there pull levers to release the bonnet and boot in the event that the central locking fails? So many questions but I do appreciate your help. Regards Gerry

POST 8Original post

The emergency engine compartment cable pull is located under the nearside rear light cluster, you should be able to hook it out through the small gap under the rear light.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Andy, I wasn't aware of either of these. Many thanks for the time you have taken to show these and add pictures, i appreciate it. Cheers Gerry

POST 10Original post

If you have electric release on the front lid, the emergency pull is on the driver's side. If it is has mechanical release, it is on the passenger side. In both cases, the rear lid emergency pull is on the passenger side behind the rear light. (RHD). There, that's told everyone how to break in to a 996! Of course, the alarm will go off if it is locked.

POST 12Original post

Not forgetting that if the battery is flat and the car is unlocked you can release the front bonnet by detaching the internal aluminium lever release unit by the drivers side door by undoing the screws which gains access to manually release the bonnet. This saves jacking the car up, releasing the wheel and removing the wheel arch lining.

POST 13Original post

Richard, do you know if that is the same for a UK 997, i.e. drivers side please?

POST 14Original post

Does this work for a UK 997 with electric trunk release, what is the aluminium section you are referring to please?

POST 15Original post

On the 996 if flat battery unlock car with key you can use slave battery to release frunk and engine cover, jump leads to footwell fuse box special connecter in there that you pull out ,and other jump cable to drivers door frame latch.then elec release buttons will work as normal

POST 16Original post

On the 997 the emergency front lid release is in a different place. Passenger side, behind the wheel arch liner, near the front, and lower down.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
