Do you think the value of the 981 GTS is going to go up or down
I think it will remain steady for a while (if not go up slightly) till the 718 GTS 4.0 start becoming available secondhand.....in about 3 years. I can't see them dropping much below £45k
Of more concern would be 718 GTS owners with the 2.5T engine. Currently used ones are around £50-£65k and I am pretty sure these will drop considerably in the short to medium term.
I should mention though that all the above is PURE guesswork
Look at this one for £58k
https://www.pistonheads.com/buy/listing/10642567?c...
It has a fully loaded spec and if it had the 4.0 engine it would probably command a price around £75k
This 981 GTS with a similar spec (but no PCCB) is £54k
https://www.pistonheads.com/buy/listing/10685791?c...
I think the 981 GTS will be safe for a while

It’s a tough one as it’s not that good a car, in fact for £50k the 2.5 GTS wins imo better car all round and a remap gives you 440bhp !!!
Boxster GTS much cheaper than Cayman which is odd esp when they are £10k plus cheaper, must be the better buy than the Cayman also.
Eps and long gearing kills the car for a driver so less demand.
Not that good a car, yet find a press review which is less than great!
Autocar loved it, no mention of any issues with steering.
I had a 2.5 S for a few days - meh!

If you don't mind the sound from the 2.5T, it's a truly lovely sports car.
Yep better to drive in every way than a 981.
Very very fast car also.
Now Boxster cost more than Caymans , I don’t get the Cayman 3.4 GTS price point.
3.4 Boxster GTS mint low milers are £42k so why buy the Cayman at £55k ?

Mint low mileage GTS Boxsters at 42k? Worth a look if I could find them?

Higher mileage ones
Redline have had a few sub 20k miles full GTS spec at £42k
They are still £10k then caymans.
Also private ones are priced at about £42k been close to buying a few times but would have to be PDK and that’s the rub.
I can do one bad thing, but I could not do eps and long gears as a fun car.
But you can buy a 2019 M2 comp with M comp brakes for £40k now, so a Cayman GTS is way to expensive imo for a 2014 car.

Youve hit the nail on the head. To keep the value up you keep the mileage down so in otherwords dont use it.
Whats the point?
in the short to medium term i think 981 values will continue their very gradual move down and GTS values may indeed consolidate around the £40-45k mark.
in the long to very long term though, i think the 981 may be the model that stands the test of time vs the 987 and the 718. in 10 or 20 years time and beyond, the slight differences in performance, handling or tech won't matter. what will matter is how the cars make you feel when you drive them and IMO there won't be anything that will come close to the drama and emotion that you get from hearing and feeling that 981 F6 crescendo to the red line.
the 987 may well give the 981 a run for its money and it will be interesting to see what happens in that regard.
i think the 718, especially the 2.0 and 2.5 turbo variants will become a bit pointless once the electric cayman (or whatever takes its place) emerges way faster and way more advanced tech wise. but even the 4.0 GTS and GT4 are so much quieter than their 987/981 counterparts and again, in the long term the differences in power and chassis won't be as important (they're not that much of a big deal even now). but who knows, maybe the Turbo variants will have some kind of 'ugly duckling' appeal and may turn out to be a big deal in decades to come?
the Cayman in the grand scheme of things is a pretty rare car and i think that at some point the mid engined and true "driver's car" nature of the car in any form or shape will be recognised, in direct contrast to the 'poor man's Porsche image it largely has now, and this will cement its place as an important car in Porsche's history.

When I was younger, for me, the ONLY Porsche that is a PROPER Porsche is the one with the engine in the back. That's the one I dreamt of and lusted for. I have had a 964, a 997.1 C2S and a 997.1 GT3 and all of them were magnificent in their own way.
The mid engined models like the Boxster and Cayman never really appealed to me till I drove them. Once I drove them I loved them. The balance and handling is great and they feel small and nimble and easy to place on the road.
As the 911 morphs into more of a larger GT type car, I think the mid engined models will find their own market and will appeal to more and more drivers.
As a side note, I think the 911 stopped feeling rear engined when the 991 came along.

Guesswork indeed, people do seem to love a bit of forum scaremongering. Fact is they are all low volume cars so values will remain strong for as long as the market remains relatively upbeat and I can also say from experience, despite the protestations of existing owners with vested interests in talking up their cars, the 981 is significantly flawed in the key areas mentioned.
Interestingly enough there was a thread in the main section recently regarding fawning press reviews being utterly worthless, quid pro quo arrangements et al, I think given all the hype vs my experience of ownership, the 981 is indeed a massively overrated car.
As for future classics, the 718 apart I currently think my money would be on a 987 manual rather than the 981 with all its flaws, presuming of course you can find one.

It’s the lemon imo as it has the s
ttest steering of just about any Porsche ever made !!
Like imo the 991.1 cars are lemons, 997 cost more now days !
Gen 1 eps was dire, and the fitment of 20” wheels with that dated gearbox made a car which did 85mph in 2nd.
987.2 cars already above base 981 prices !!
981 will drop to nothing imo as will 991.1.
Poor cars.
All imho, but prices are starting to reflect the above so demand is there for the 987.2 and 997,2 cars.

don't know where you get any of your figures from but a quick search for 987 and 981 Caymans on AT sees the cheapest 981 at just over 25k and the most expensive 987 at just under 25k. OTOH there is already a ton of overlap between 981 and 718 prices
in any case i didn't say that 981 values would outperform the 987 in the long run, i said it would be interesting to see how the 987 would perform.
you predicted 50k+ Cayman R's yet they're already sub 40k - ever considered that maybe we all value different things in different ways and that not everyone is interested in tearing it up on public roads with the ultimate in steering perfection?
the worst thing about the 981 is also the easiest to fix - the tyres, yet most are happy to run Pirellis blissfully unaware how much of a change the Michelins make to both the handling and the ride quality. would better steering improve the 981? of course it would but it's not bad to the point where it makes a difference to most people.
the 981 has one of the sweetest engines ever made and it sounds glorious at any revs. there's no need to be at 8k revs to appreciate it, though that's where it sounds best. i also think that on balance the 981 is also the best looking. yes all 3 variants are awkward in their own different ways, but the 718, especially in the blackened GTS guise is a bit brash and i'm not sure it will age as gracefully as the 981 will. i'm still undecided on the 987.
Don't worry about 911R - he's one of the crew who insist they own the best car in the history of the universe and everything else is crap. The all-round strengths of 981 are more than confirmed by its effective reintroduction in 2020 as the 6-cylinder 918s.
When you consider 981s could be bought new from £37,500 just eight years ago the value in them was simply astounding.

I have owned 77 odd cars and 9 Porkers.
My opinions are based on ownership and driving for fun over posing.
Is what it is, imo 981 and 991.1 cars will just drop to nothing as they are not fun cars to drive.
I know the default buy is a Porsche for a guy with a pay rise , so driving and I mean driving not posing is far from most buyers minds.
Most buys are status, hence some one won’t pay £50k for a Cayman R but will for a newer 981 GTS.

They'll only "drop to nothing" if everyone agrees with you, so therefore they won't as most people disagree with you!
The 981 was and is seen as a great car by most.

you make some great contributions to the forum, but a bit of open mindedness can go a long way. cars aren't bought and owned either for purist driving or for posing. do you really think that or are you just trolling?
there are lots of different things i appreciate about my 981. driving for fun is one of them but that doesn't have to mean constantly wringing the s
t out of the engine on public roads. and just because i might appreciate the design of a car, the way it sounds, the fact that i smile every time i open the door and see my alcantara interior and the bucket seats, doesn't make me a poser. i really couldn't care less about what anyone else thinks about my car, and in fact if i wanted to pose the Cayman and it's 'poor man's Porsche' label would hardly be at the top of my list.
but we've been through this before and it's all getting a bit repetitive...

people buy cars for lots of reasons. your point simply confirms mine - that in the long term the slightly inferior steering will have little bearing on the desirability of the 981, and that your POV's are sometimes very narrow minded
the R may well have its day but i think if it does it will elevate the status of all Caymans.

what kind of time frame are you looking at?
in the short to medium term i would expect the gradual fall in prices to continue, and the premiums from one model to another (within the same generation) to remain similar to what they are now.

the 987 is due to receive official classic status from Porsche next year (strong rumours and mention from Porsche clubs in Germany). That is a factor you are not considering in your math

the 987 Cayman has 'modern classic' written all over it and i'm a big fan. didn't you have a Cayman not too long ago?
not sure i agree that the 718 is more Porsche than the 981 though. i did a side by side a while back (though it was a GT4 comparison) and to me the 981 looks more refined and subtle, whereas the 718 looks more pumped up and shouty. still a great looking car but i think the 981 version is the purer design.
https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...
and then there's the GTS with the black details. a bit brash for a Porsche and not sure the black details will age well. i still don't get that gaping front bumper either - definitely not Porsche like in my eyes though the original 718 turbo models are quite a bit more subtle.

Thanks for the correction. Have you noticed everything on all forum threads gets challenged or put straight. Fair enough, and thank you for the detailed reply. Anyhow, back to the question on 981 GTS values, they’ll be starting with a 3 in the price by end of year, if not sooner. At some point when some start to have 100K+ miles on them, then it’ll start with a 2. I could never buy a 981 or 718 as the blank buttons would drive me insane. I’m happy with my Cayman R I bought three days ago, and even if the R was double the price, I’d still pay it. Some people will have the same emotion about the 981 GTS and fair play to them.
Edited by julian987R on Sunday 2nd August 21:43
Values threads always go the same way, owners will claim their version is best and argue why, buyers will have their own opinions and sellers will champion what ever version they have to sell.
987 is old and will need work,
981 has poor steering,
718 engine sounds dull.
987 is a great car to drive
981 has a proper 6 pot engine
718 is VERY quick
Buy what you want to drive and after you have driven it, post up a thread on a driving story

Dare I say it, but I think the shape of the 987 Cayman is pretty well suited for carrying off a retro set of Fuchs and a few other details.
To make a car suitable for anyone with a modest budget who missed the whole restomod/air cooled 911 boat, and doesn't want to spend 20 grand on a shagged out GT3-kitted 996 3.4 (even one without a Tiptronic box and butterscotch interior).
That is maybe a slightly different buyer market than compared to the more modern looking 718 and 981 who doesn't want an "old looking" car.

These points are the usual forum internet folklore. I would probably disagree with a lot of these. Note the current car market is crazy at the moment, the post lockdown boom is in full swing and this will come to an end later this year if not sooner. Bear this in mind when looking to buy, I think all prices will be on a downward trend (perhaps even more pronounced than the usual seasonal trend) come Oct/Nov time. If you are selling even WBAC values are currently looking strong so now is definitely an ideal time to sell not buy.
Being an owner, obviously I have to say the 987 is the perfect model. That said the 981s are also looking a bit long in the tooth , the newest coming up to five years' and the older cars approaching 8 years' old. These are probably the most overpriced and therefore the most overdue for a big correction, consequently these values will fall very hard later in the year, so tread very carefully indeed if residuals are important. These "bubbles" have a habit of deflating very quickly as market sentiment changes. The F4s are probably on much more solid ground now as there is no halo effect, 'last of the line' nonsense and the market appraisal of the four is now fairly well known.
I personally found the 981 EPAS truly awful but perhaps it matters where you are coming from. That said coming from an F6 I really think all the "glorious flat 6" comments are hugely overstated, again these are mainly from current owners of an F6. I actually found the F4 sound to be pretty good, in complete contrast to many comments on here, perhaps written by posters from their parents' basements with no actual experience of driving the car.
Of course a subjective area, but I leave you with Car & Driver's appraisal of the 718 from back in 2018 on reviewing an S vs the TTRS:
CarAndDriver said:
But speaking of sounds, oh, the Porsche’s. Rest in peace, flat-six, and long live the turbo four! The more time we spend with 718s—and the further into memory that six’s wail fades—the more we like the four. This thing sounds like a goblin, all mechanical grumble and spitting overrun.

what do we deduce from the link you posted? that it means more if it comes from an 'official' source? i can do that too:

all this proves is that one man's "truly awful" steering is another man's motoring nirvana... or does it simply confirm that we all appreciate different things in different ways?
Porsche (Cayman?) owners are a funny lot...

981 owner by any chance... ?
OP asked a question about future values hence my response on the current market and the various different cars.
There are plenty of other sources for market info, the car salesman thread on here can be quite telling.
The steering criticism is widely acknowledged by everyone except current owners it seems...

I've no axe to grind or skin in the game, I just think this particular criticism on internet forums has been overdone, it is lazy journalism really. Is a nice bandwagon to jump on though, if you own the old version.

if you bothered to read my posts you would note that i fully acknowledge the steering issues. bit too much to ask it would seem.

Just one observation - Peak 986 sales around the millenium were supported by huge sales in the US notably in Silicon Valley where dotcom bubble wealth fuelled sales.
Peak 987 was in turn fuelled by the launch of the Cayman and I believe that it outsold the Boxster 2:1 for a couple of years despite the initial premium pricing (which shocked a few
at the time but on reflection, was a master stroke by Porsche who rode the wave of pent up demand for a closed Boxster).
It was arguably always only ever going to be downhill from those 2005-07 heights, but the 2008 financial crisis certainly sealed it making the late-model 987s comparatively scarce.

A different lazy bandwagon to the one criticising the steering in the 981 no doubt. Oh the irony.
If anything, I found it remarkable that the press made such a big deal about the sound as they are usually very forgiving to Porsche in their reviews so as not to be blacklisted. The 718 engine sound or the way it went wasn't quite my cup of tea but it wasn't actually my main gripe with the car. I just think it looked terrible. I used to like the 981 looks but it seems to have not aged well. The 987 is the best looking one for me. A regular 987 Boxster with the hood down even better.
I used to think steering feel wasn't going to stop me enjoying a fun car - at least not until I owned the latest version of the MX5. The steering feel absolutely ruined that car for me even though the rest was very well judged. The 981 steering wasn't anywhere near as bad as that in my experience.

"Even more importantly, in the Chinese market we have a very cool car and we have a way younger target group. The group is way more female, so the typical Boxster customer is 30-year old Chinese women. And the value is unbelievably good because, for sure, once they are with Porsche, they will continue that.
"Don't get me wrong, we're a little bit in the handbag business. So, if you love your daughter, wife, girlfriend, you can give her a handbag or, if you love her a little bit more, you buy her a Boxster.
"The girls in China really like it. You know there are more boys than girls in China because, some 30 years ago there was some selection process. The Chinese man has to do something. We have solutions," he chuckles, tongue firmly in cheek.
"Now with adding the six-cylinder again – with the GTS and GT4 – we hope and we can already see in the order intakes that our more traditional markets, Europe, UK, Australia, US, the interest on the 718 really comes back," he says.
OUCH! He called the 2.0 Boxster 4 pot a handbag!
Chinese men bought the 2.0 4 pots for their wives and girlfriends and that helped the brand get established in the far East but the 6 cylinder has been re-introduced in the more 'traditional' markets!
That's got to hurt if you are a 4 pot owner
The thing is, I really like the 2.5t engine in the GTS.

Why would it hurt?, opinions are like a
holes - everybody has one. Should you choose to value someone else's or not is entirely your choice... but they are quite simply a great engine as you've already said. Can't please all the people, all the time. I buy my cars to drive, not 'just' listen to.

How opinions differ (it's a good thing of course)! I think the 981 is the real sweet spot looks-wise in the 98x series. 987 Boxster OK, 987 Cayman dreadful (R excepted maybe and I don't know why I think that), 981 gorgeous, 982/718... subtle changes spoiled the looks.

It depends on if a person is into Modern or Classic. There is no denying the 987 has a more sculptured and classic feel than the chiselled and modern design language of the 718. The 981 could well be the sweet spot for those that like Classic and Modern? Personally I think the 987 is the sweetest and cutest but thats because I love classic cars. Those that love modern cars, I can see why they'd prefer the 981/718. If we all liked the same thing then life would be boring right.
My son bought this a short while ago from RPM to replace his 987 2.7.
It’s a magnificent thing, and has the sports chassis and manual ‘box.
I can see why they’re popular.

Fairly certain it’s Carmine… I have a Carmine 981 GT4,

Agreed; I had a Guards Red 924 Carrera and 944 some years ago, and the Carmine really does pop in the right light.
We currently have three red cars at home, Imperial Red C36 (actually quite a similar hue to the Porsche) and the Tornado Red Citigo in the background.
I had a 981 Cayman GTS for a few years. Just a great car.
IMO the 982 (718) update just doesn't look as good as the 981 (although GT4s and Spyders look fine). It's partly the size of the side air intakes and some other things I can't quite put my finger on. The 981 is such a resolved design; it always looks 'just right'. Shame Porsche messed it up - the same applies to 991 > 992.

Nice Spec, but looks a bit rough around the edges imo, also says all panels have been re-sprayed except boot lid & spoiler.
At the end of the day at the right price I'm sure it'll be a good car for someone.
I know from experience of risk from other peoples cars when parked up but quite something to need to respray every panel due to London living.

I went from a 981 GTS that I had for seven years to a 718 GTS 4.0, and I really feel this. I just don't love to look at the new one as much. There's too many little bits of the design that just aren't right, especially from the front.
As a machine I the new car is better in almost every way (other than noise, of course), and every time I drive it I love it. But when I see a 981 GTS I just think they really nailed that design and it makes me miss it.
Yes, nailed it; that sums it up.
It does indeed. I'd run a couple of 718s alongside my old 981 GT4 over the years. For me it's the tail, but the front became more "slabby" too. 981 tail lights into rear wing/spoiler are just gorgeous. Most recent 718 was a Cayman GTS 4.0, and it's brilliant in every way, but the 981 really had something about it, especially in looks.
But then last year I kept the GTS 4.0, and chopped the GT4 in for a 718 GT4 RS. The 718s are great cars, and I'm not sure there's any going back for all kinds of reasons. But I think a few versions of the 981 are going to turn out to be underrated classics. 981 GTS might be one of them.

Tbh sounds like you have the perfect combo there.
Have considered buying a 718 4.0 manual to run alongside the 981 PDK GTS but then it's finding time to use both as I don't need a daily driver . Also double the running costs.
Interestingly after having many 911's over the years I now find the current versions too big which is a shame as the 992 is such a lovely looking car.

So around 44k all in with commissions.
Considering every panel had been resprayed and the interior looked a tad shoddy I'd say the seller did well .
https://collectingcars.com/for-sale/2014-porsche-9...
I was watching this, I would of had a bid if it struggled but 44k+ for a car described like that which no one could view before hand was too risky for me. Excellent spec car apart from the colour!
Be interesting to see how its described when it turns up on a dealers forecourt!

Personally I'd say a good one to miss .

Think they are being greedy now, they listed it this morning at 46999 now its been increased to 48.5k.
They have probably seen the autotrader search stats cause of this and increased the price.
Can't say if it is the same car as I described earlier but then increasing the price by 1.5k in a matter of hours is enough to put me off!

I think that is a friend's old Cayman GTS - I don't think it even made it on to the RPM website officially before it got sold. My friend had an itch for a GT4 which saw RPM sell the GTS for him. I think he got it serviced by Porsche Leicester on the way to RPM to keep up the OPC history!

Good to hear.
My son saw a carmine red car in a background shot on the ramps in the RPM and rang them to see if they would sell it.
The car he has is a sports-chassis manual, which is exactly what he wanted.

Not even sure if i have auto climate on my car but then I only ever drive it with the roof down anyway.
As for Bose, I have that but that's but the standard PCM unit is so outdated now the only sound i listen to is that wonderful exhaust note .
Turns out the one mentioned above is guards & not carmine.
I had Bose on my last one...it's astonishing this is meant to be a stereo upgrade, bloody awful! I have sound package plus in my current Gt4 and its still rubbish but better then Bose IMO. Aftermarket is probably the only way to go if you actually want something that sounds ok.

I think it's kind of pointless to spend a lot of money on this stuff unless you have something like a Lexus. The Boxster is a pretty noisy car; no hi-fi's going to work with the road noise alone as a starting point.
