Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

This transmission has been rebuilt less than 100 miles ago. I've taken it out and sent it back twice, and the rebuilder sent me a different valve body after the second try didn't work. The new valve body is better in that I can drive normally for 5-10 minutes, depending on ambient temperature. But, it always goes into limp mode at some point. I'm sending this same data to the rebuilder, but hoping somebody might have some kind words of wisdom other than a cliff and a 2x4 on the pedal. Collecting all the data has been a challenge. Some tools will save some of the data, and some will save more but then there's no way to share the data or graph. Extended Fault Data The PDF shows what I think is the relevant data from the Porsche PIWIS 3 Diagnostic tester. There were 55 pages of repeating data, likely because I tried to save it a number of times before I figured out the magic. So, I attempted to trim it down to a few cases for a given error code. The Front Right and Front Left wheel sensor codes are interesting because they both seem to be going the same speed. So, they may be false flags pointing to another one of the issues. The 5th gear monitor shows what is happening before it goes into limp mode from 5th. The torque converter clutch solenoid error didn't show up as much as the other ones, but seems to correlate with the 5th gear monitor (it mentions 5th). I've seen limp mode in 2nd and 3rd for sure. Not sure about 4th, but maybe. I'm not sure what to make out of the last page. Data Chart I attempted to take the data from one run and put it on an Excel sheet. I then annotated what I thought was happening. I can't be sure of what of the fault data correlates to this data, and there's no way to save selected or commanded gear. Video It's too big to email, so here's a link: Porsche Video 1.mp4 The video shows about 9 minutes of the gauges while driving. Unfortunately, I didn't have an empty road to keep things more steady in terms of acceleration, braking, etc. The first instance of limp mode occurs at around 8 minutes into the video. This video does NOT match the chart, That's a different data set which I could plot out if it helps. It took me a while to make sense of the first data set, so I wanted to get what I had out there first.

POST 2Original post

The key faults in your PDF are the transmission input speed / stall speed implausible signal faults, plus the 5th gear monitor and torque converter clutch solenoid faults. That is a much stronger pattern for an electrical/control issue than a box that is mechanically destroyed from the outset. The fact it drives normally for 5 to 10 minutes before dropping into limp mode makes me suspicious of a heat-related issue in the internal loom, input speed signal, connector or valve body/solenoid side. Take this car back to the rebuilder.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the insight! I thought that maybe the controller was getting hot, but the case was cool to the touch when I checked minutes after getting into limp mode. I have all the wiring loop exposed inside the car, and checked the harness inside the transmission. The input speed sensor is new, but measured a similar impedance to the old one and performed similarly when waving a piece of steel rapidly across it. I haven't looked for wiring damage from the transmission through the floor. I'm not sure how that could be an issue that is heat-related though. Where I live, all the Indy Porsche shops didn't want to take the transmission out to have it rebuilt because it would occupy space in their shops too long. The rebuilder only works on the transmissions outside of the car. So, I've become quite adept at taking it out and putting it back in without removing the engine. Short version: I need to live near better shops!

I cleaned the chassis ground connection for the battery, though no obvious dirt or corrosion was present. I pulled the transmission cable through the floor and checked every wire to/from the transmission from/to the TCU. All were good. I took the cover off the TCU and inspected it. The control board is riveted to the metal base, and I chose not to drill those out, so I couldn't check the two electrolytic capacitors unfortunately. The normal failure mode is just losing capacitance over time or venting and there were no signs of the latter. I verified the transmission temperature sensor with an IR thermometer and it was within 3 degrees F. The sensor measured 970 Ohms at 22 C, and is supposed to measure 1000 Ohms art 25 C. That's obviously important because I checked and rechecked the oil level based on that reading previously. I'll probably check it again anyway. I also verified the impedance of both speed sensors were in spec. I am in contact with the rebuilder, but he can't do much without sufficient data. The 2001 is light on data options. So, I used an 8-channel USB oscilloscope to observe all the valve body drive signals while shifting through the gears with the car raised up. I uploaded that here: Thread '2001 996 C4 Cab Valve Body Signals' 4 Jun 2026 I've been trying to capture data to show what's happening on my 2001 Tip. It functions as expected until it gets warm, then it goes into limp mode. I made this video using a Hantek 1008C O-scope. The next step is to interlace GoPro and PIWIS data to look at the actual time of failure / limp mode. 2001 Tip Signals ronegarnett 2001 996 valve body Replies: 3 Forum: Porsche 911 996 (1997-2005) I'm hoping today to make another Oscope video along with a video of live data like Trans in/out RPM and a GoPro video of the dash. I'll then synch those on a video editor and hopefully get some good data to show what it looks like before and during a failure. I've also printed out the troubleshooting guide and am going to go back through it again to make sure I didn't miss anything.
