Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

In 3.5 years other than servicing, I have only had to replace a split drive shaft gator.

Suggestion
FWIW, my car covered nearly 90,000 motorway miles in the first 3 years of its life, with only occasional use for the next 16 years, and I bought it from the first owner who kept it 19 years.

Suggestion
These cars last better with regular use rather than long periods sitting idle.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm considering purchasing a higher mileage 110k C4S x51 from a private seller. Excellent service history and IMS done, and bores clear. Manual. Dark silver colour.
On one hand it seems that these are incredibly rare and therefore potentially a good car to own and prices could appreciate and the car may be easier to sell.
On the other hand 110k seems high and could put off potential buyers?
I'm not looking to buy as an investment per say, but I also want to be sure I can sell it on in future fairly easily, if needed.
Any opinion?
X51 is great, im lucky enough to have a c2 with it. If it starts and runs fine, has been maintained properly etc then i'd not worry about the mileage too much. If its made it to that mileage then its a good engine. Paying for a full inspection/ borescope may put your mind at rest of course.
I don’t know the numbers but X51 doesn’t seem that common an option to my knowledge.
There’s some great info on web somewhere about how it came to be, it seems Porsche developed it because there was a chance the mezger GT3 engine wouldn’t pass tighter controls for racing, they hedged their bets by developing the M96 for racing, once the mezger was signed off they didn’t need to continue the x51 development and sold it off as a power upgrade option on road cars.
Anyone with any more info please correct me if..
I have a 996 C4S with 110k on the clock. (Not X51 tho....)
The mileage vs condition & maintenance debate goes on perpetually, and IMO is particularly acute in the UK. Perhaps because we're a small country - Americans aren't nearly as hung up on mileage as a factor of value as the Brits. Either way, i think it's really misleading.
Maintenance trumps mileage for me all day long.
FWIW, my car covered nearly 90,000 motorway miles in the first 3 years of its life, with only occasional use for the next 16 years, and I bought it from the first owner who kept it 19 years. It had been looked after fastidiously by East London OPC who were the supplying dealer from new. Had a clean Borescope by RPM Technik. In 3.5 years other than servicing, I have only had to replace a split drive shaft gator. Other than that, it's been rock solid and i love it.
I paid £24k for it with 99k on the clock because it was in a completely different league from most of the 50k mile cars that had seen high No. of owners and frugal maintenance.
I say this only because IMO, the way a car feels / history, ownership etc is more telling than just thinking lower miles = better condition. But I know you know that anyway!
The car you're looking at sounds great. Don't be hung up on mileage or borescore. The internet can send you mental....
Ok thanks for the responses. I will go and visit the car. I've been able to hammer out a pretty good deal, so that's good.
Top tip. I uploaded all the service book pages and all the various invoices for works into Gemini and it created a really helpful timeline, and identified the IMS has been doing, RMS and several clutch changes. I have a bore scope coming shortly too.
I just need to remember how to drive a manual! I have an etron and a DCT M4 !
It’s not high mileage considering the age of the car. Always buy on condition, history and the feel younger from the owner, oh and condition, did I say that?
Now I am conflicted. I've been offered a 49k miles, mint car with IMS done and bore + metallurgy analysis ok. It is a tiptronic but I recently discovered the sprint booster trick.
Canvas roof also mint.
I feel more drawn to the lower mileage car....head over heart.
Tips are worth a bit less typically in the 996 4S.
It's not necessarily fair but that seems to be the case. My 4S is manual with 150k so 110 is relatively fresh.
If it scopes clear and hot idle is sweet, it could be all right.
Low mileage versus high mileage is always a contentious issue but they are all over 22 years old now regardless of the odometer reading, and owner counts only go up.
X51 is a huge plus.
The mileage on the first car might put people off when the time comes to sell it but the lower mileage one could put people off being a tip. I went lower miles/tip when I got mine and I don’t regret it at all
Horses for courses, higher mileage (which 110k isn’t) gets you a better purchase price in the first place. These cars last better with regular use rather than long periods sitting idle.
As others have said, buy the car and the maintenance history, not the numbers on the Speedo.
Internet is full of keyboard warriors telling you what and what not to buy, most probably don’t even own a Porsche keyring. Life’s too short, get it bought
