One of mine snapped last year , I drilled it out and epoxied a stainless M6 stud in the post and it worked fine but it wasn't long enough when I fitted the new coils so I heated it up with gas and it pulled straight out then i just epoxied a longer one in.
Outcome qualification: Negation, uncertainty or missing explicit repair resolution overrides the raw extraction signal.

I used anti sieze paste on the new plugs for piece of mind - don't over tighten use the correct torque.
Recommend having a number of different small extensions

Luckily i have small hands and nibble fingers but i would recommend having a number of different small extensions for getting out your plugs at the rear end of the engine.

Looking for some pointers on how difficult it is to replace coilpacks and spark plugs yourself on a UK car, and any tips / experience with hard to remove fixings for heat shields / coil packs or the plugs themselves.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all. Looking for some pointers on how difficult it is to replace coilpacks and spark plugs yourself on a UK car, and any tips / experience with hard to remove fixings for heat shields / coil packs or the plugs themselves.
Any special tools recommended?
Thanks
I did mine a couple of weeks ago but i have a lift so it's easier I'd say but easily doable on the driveway/garage floor.
Shields are 2 x 10mm m6 bolts that may or may not snap , if they do then you've got a bigger job drilling them out.
The Beru coil packs are now the 997 ones which are deeper than the old style ones and require a spacer and longer bolts for the shields.(about 10mm)
Being so long you might think the old ones won't come out but they will , you just have to find the place to put them so they do. If you've got oil in the tubes , you could get new O rings for them or new tubes as well. That could be fiddly in the car , I did mine when the engine was out, I wouldn't bother unless they're bad.
Weirdly I never changed my plugs , don't know why.
I'd go Beru (Borg Warner) for the coil packs , I think I got mine from Heritage.
No special tools just special skills
I did mine a couple of years ago but I had the exhaust removed at the time which made things a lot easier. I would recommend new plugs every two years or remove the old ones and refit with anti sieze paste. It's not the plugs wearing out it the plugs siezing in the heads that can be an issue. I used anti sieze paste on the new plugs for piece of mind - don't over tighten use the correct torque. I fitted new Beru coil packs and as UM says the tops of these are thicker but you get new bolts provided.
I watched an FCP Euro video on how to do it, but that car already had no heatshields in place as they were missing, but also being a US car everything came undone easily, which I know if often not the case for UK cars.
I have found a website doing a set of BERU coils for £112, the newer version with the longer screws. Do you know if there is a fixing and spacer kit for the heatshields? Ordered plugs from Heritage Parts for £42.50 delivered.
Not sure if it is something I will attempt just yet, but will maybe have a look at the condition under the car and whether I want to risk giving it a try.
I would recommend removing the back boxes and bumpers, you can do it without but it is a huge pain IMO. If you take the other bits out it's pretty simple and gives you a good opportunity to have a good poke around, swap in some stainless hardware etc.
I changed my plugs and coils at the same time. Did it with the car jacked up at the jacking point. Luckily i have small hands and nibble fingers but i would recommend having a number of different small extensions for getting out your plugs at the rear end of the engine. Go for it and besides saving money it's very satisfying
Even if your car is quite rusty in general I doubt you'll have much trouble with the heat shields. The silencers are a different story if you decide to remove them. Either way the left bank is trickier to access because of the exhaust hanger, you need a few extensions, joints etc.
I know some people say not to put anything (anti sieze) on the threads. But I always do and always have done (Tygris) I just don't do them up quite as tight.
Well spotted but would it be any different? Don't know !
You do get new longer bolts with the Beru coils but you'll need 4 longer heat shield bolts most likely and make 4 spacers.

Coil packs are BERU ZS178, new longer bolts (M6 x 40) are Torx heads but an 8mm or 10mm (I don't recall which) socket does the job if you don't have an E8 socket, tighten to 10Nm torque which is very low. Nothing on the spark plug threads and tighten to 30Nm, then +3 Nm on first fitting (25Nm and +5Nm on refitting). The scary bit is sometimes how much torque you need to apply to undo a plug given the low installation torques!
