Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Couple of minor annoyances...remote key fob central locking isn't working; have changed the key battery but still no joy.
Leading evidence: 'Replace key battery' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'regulator than a door latch microswitch' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Adjust (or how the glass is clamped in it)' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
Your window regulator probably just needs adjusting (or how the glass is clamped in it), it's trial and error to get it right.

Suggestion
You can also adjust the tension of the cable slightly, but how depends on which regulator you have - some have pins in the mechanism, some have an adjustment screw.

I notice now that when opening the door, as soon as the outer door handle moves the window attempts to drop but it only comes down a couple of mm, so more likely the regulator than a door latch microswitch.

After that there's routine servicing and usual repair activity from that point forward.

The alarm is supposed to go off if you don't get the key in the ignition quick enough - it's programmed to do that (but only when using the key to open the door).

I'm fairly certain that reflowing the PCB joints resolved both fob issues but there is also there is an article on the JMG Porsche site where they talk about re-synching the fob using these steps below.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The LEDs now flashed and it still didn't work so ultimately I reflowed all the joints on the PCB - particulary on the battery side of the PCB which seemed to resolve the issues on both keys.
So...as mentioned in "Is much selling.." I bought a cheap 996 C2 a week or so ago. Now for some further detail...as much as I have so far. Car was shipped from the factory to Porsche North America in RHD and from there to (we think) the Bahamas. In 2008 it was shipped to the UK and registered here, which is where the paper documents and MOT history begins....nothing prior to that. There are invoices from 2011 for 24 valve stem seals and top-end parts and from an engineering firm for cylinder head pressure testing and resizing Conrod small end bushes to fit customer-supplied pistons and gudgeon pins. All this implies (one assumes) a rebuild. After that there's routine servicing and usual repair activity from that point forward.
I picked up the car from Essex and pointed it northwards, heading for home at the very top of Lancashire. At the A1M/M62 roundabout it dumped all of its coolant and it was recovered to Ninemeister. Immediately before the Easter weekend they pulled the inlet manifold in order to access the pipework round the AOS - apparently there's a coolant feed to aid in the warm-up cycle? Time consuming and awkward to access, but less labour than dropping the engine to get to it. All sorted and I collected the car and drove home without any further drama.
Next on the job list is removing the K&N induction and re-fitting the stock airbox and filter.
Couple of minor annoyances...remote key fob central locking isn't working; have changed the key battery but still no joy. When unlocking the car manually and opening the driver's door from the outside the window doesn't drop, nor when exiting the car from the inside (though as soon as the inner door latch is moved I can hear some sort of actuator from within the door but nothing actually happens). About half the time when unlocking the door the horn beeps once...sometimes twice and if I don't get the key into the ignition switch the alarm goes off. I believe this is related to the various micro switches but from description I haven't yet worked out which one (or ones!) are likely to have failed.
Examining the airbox which came with the car, it's fitted with a new panel air filter, appears complete (except what I assume is a void for the inlet air temp sensor which is currently mounted into the K&N kit). One of the bottom spigots which locates into a rubber grommet at the rear of the engine bay is snapped off, so I made a replacement spigot and a reinforcing piece.
I'll have a go at swapping them over this weekend.
Regards the remote key not working:
I posted something on a FB group somewhere regarding how I managed to get both fobs to work on wifey's 996.
Both keys would start the car so that indicated that the ID48 transponder in each key is known to the car. However neither would unlock it so these are the (condensed) steps I went through.
The LEDs did't flash after changing the battery so the next step was to change the microswitch.
The LEDs now flashed and it still didn't work so ultimately I reflowed all the joints on the PCB - particulary on the battery side of the PCB which seemed to resolve the issues on both keys. I'm an ex IT (bench) tech so had a fine soldering iron and suitable flux to do the job but I'm sure that there will be someone near you with sufficient experience to do this.

before
reflowing all the PCB joints so I can't say if it really made a difference or not.
1. Put the key manually into the door lock (it does not matter if it is already locked or unlocked.
2. Press the lock/unlock button and hold it in.
3. Turn the key to the lock position and back to the middle position five times and return to the middle position one last time.
4. Let go of the lock/unlock button.
5. Press and hold in the lock/unlock button again.
6. Turn the key to the unlock position and back the middle position five times and return the the middle position again.
7. Let go of the lock/unlock button.
8. Press the lock/unlock button in again and hold it in.
9. Turn the key to the lock position and back to the middle position five times and return to the middle position again.

That went well....stock airbox refitted.
I notice now that when opening the door, as soon as the outer door handle moves the window attempts to drop but it only comes down a couple of mm, so more likely the regulator than a door latch microswitch. I'm still not clear why the alarm goes off unless I key the key into the ignition within five seconds and turn it on.
The alarm is supposed to go off if you don't get the key in the ignition quick enough - it's programmed to do that (but only when using the key to open the door). Stops people picking the lock and breaking in.
Your window regulator probably just needs adjusting (or how the glass is clamped in it), it's trial and error to get it right. You can also adjust the tension of the cable slightly, but how depends on which regulator you have - some have pins in the mechanism, some have an adjustment screw.
Try reversing the battery in a key fob for 10 seconds, then switching it back - that sometimes cures the fob getting it's knicks in a twist.
If the horn makes a beep it's because the alarm control unit is sensing something is open - like the central arm rest glove box. You need to check everything is closed and registering as closed, eg. interior lights go off when shutting both doors.
Good point!! There's a nasty Pioneer in there, though I have the original unit in a box here. Apparently it wasn't working, but I'd rather address that problem than look at the ugly Pioneer (even though it might have Bluetooth and USB inputs).
Well....that was simpler than it looked. No red LED flash - wonder why not?
Let's prise it open....
The PO had changed the battery the day I collected the car and, while forcing the battery into place, had folded this little plastic tang down, neatly obscuring the electrical contact.
I now have remote central locking!
