Hi from Bangkok.
I have owned this 2010
Cayman
2.9 since new. The car currently has 29K miles and mostly driven mildly over the years. Recently, I haven’t got a chance to drive the car much and I have noticed the car now has ticking sound coming from the right hand side of the engine. The noise is similar to a lot of Youtube videos describing stuck lifter noise. However, after driving my car spiritedly and changed my oil, the noise is still present. It only happens when the water temp reached normal temp. I have no clues what causes it. Is it possible that my water pump is on its way out? The car performs great and there’s no oil consumption. However I have noticed that I need to add a little bit of coolant once in a while.
Thank you.

It could be a fuel injector noise. It is also common for these engines to make that noise if a
spark plug
is a little loose. It’s fine to drive so just drive it and enjoy it . Keep an eye on the oil if you are mechanically inclined? Throw a set of plugs in it might as well do the coils while you’re in there too. But to reiterate, the car is fine, just go drive it and enjoy it in good health.
Thank you for your opinion. I have replaced the coil packs when they failed about 4k miles ago.
Spark plugs
were replaced as well. I might check if they have gotten loose over the time.
I dunno, man: these engines always sound like typewriters to me. Try a mechanic's stethoscope on the top of the head: if it's a specific cylinder or injector you should be able to tell. Also check your
exhaust
manifold bolts: a few of us have found those loose (or missing!) on the
987.2
and an
exhaust
leak will cause a tick.
(Interestingly the
987.2
spec on those bolts is 18 ft-lb, but they upped it to 22 ft-lb on the
981
despite it being the same head. When I installed new gaskets I torqued to 22 ft-lb and after ~150 miles retorqued them and found them a bit loose. They have stayed tight after the retorque. Also I'm too tired to do the conversion to Nm and km so you're on your own there
)
I doubt it's the water pump but the sethoscope test will tell you. Needing to top off the coolant now and again is normal on these cars in my experience: the cooling system "breathes" through the vented tank
cap
so you lose a bit to evaporation over time.
