Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

When I switch the air-con on it’s noisy, and feels rough, vibrates , almost mechanical, bearing sound feel, I’ve been told they do that when they need a re gas, is this correct, or could it be the pump/fan etc?

POST 2Original post

Yes this is my experience. A tin of aircontopup and the required fill hose will confirm this. These tins are often more expensive at this time of year, but likely you a leak somewhere. Leaks are often at condensers in the front bumper but given the age of 996 often the lines themselves leak also.

POST 3Original post

It will make unpleasant noises when re- gas is needed

POST 4Original post

Really needed it yesterday....!!! 32 degrees at oulton park so it was much needed. Have it regassed as others have said which usually involves a leak test beforehand..!!!

POST 5Original post

When the system detects low refrigerant pressure the AC clutch doesn't kick in, so I don't know how low pressure can lead to vibration. Maybe the compressor pulley or clutch is on its way out? Unless you mean the vibration is at the front/cabin.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I had the lines replaced a couple of years ago so hopefully gas just needs topping up, thanks for the input.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Any recommendations for the complete kit including the gas, oil and connectors?

Thanks Alex, interestingly it says on your first link not to add oil, what’s your thoughts? Just go for a top up. It still runs cold but not as good as when it was first regassed after the air con pipes were replaced, it’s just the noise.

Don't add oil. Only add oil if you've stripped the system and flushed all the components out.

POST 14Original post

Having explored these tin can 'top ups' I decided to get the AC man in a van to come around and regas the Audi with the oil and correct weight of gas. They draw out the refridgerant and pressure test the system with nitrogen. If a leak is found it's £25 as they can't proceed. If not the refill is £80 and took all of 20mins on the drive. If I get another 21yrs before another regas I'll be happy. Fortunately for me I called to book it last Thursday and I got the first appointment after the bank holiday and the heat wave. He told me he was getting calls, texts and WhatsApp as late a 1030pm on Bank Holiday Monday. The phone never stopped ringing when he was with me. And as Fred Pontin used to say "Book early"

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Got my local garage to regas as they took out the old gas and oil and renewed. £60. Glad to say this has cured the noisy AC Thanks for everyone’s help
