Today I noticed my 2006
Boxster
's rearview mirror was "droopy". After checking it out, I noticed several of the plastic tabs on the part that attaches to the ball joint seemed loose and broke off.
Now, the mirror itself is in perfect condition and it's the auto-dimming version. However, it doesn't seem like they sell just the mirror housing and the whole assembly is expensive and not easy to find.
Anyone has any tips on how to fix this? I was thinking about getting something else in there so the ring can keep the whole assembly tight, but can't think of a specific way to do it.
Not my photo, but these are the tabs I'm talking about:
Thanks in advance!
Here's some actual photos from my vehicle:
Cannibalize donor mirror from salvage to restore ball and socket union or use donor replacement?
Yeah I was just going through eBay and there is not much of a supply of donor mirrors. The ones available are several hundreds of dollars for the auto-dimming versions.
New one is $499
Interior Mirror - Auto Dimming
I see a much lower price for the mirror at Auto Atlanta.
Interior Mirror Door Mirror (autoatlanta.com)
You should view the schematic yourself and verify it is the right one but looks like $131.15.

I have purchased from them myself and had good experience.
Thanks for the link. After further research it seems that may be the non-dimming version.
For reference:
987.731.511.00 01C is the model I currently have. This seems to have been replaced with
987.731.511.03 01C
and then
987.731.511.05 01C
.
987.731.511.04 01C seems to be non-dimming from
this eBay link
.
Here's some closeup of the damage for future reference (also the part number label):
This is what I did. After seeing a fix showing super glue vs. a silicone glove tip, I was not liking the idea of super glue. The poster showed the tip tearing but he only cut it to fit the ball. What I did was use the thin latex gloves and cut two tips about 2". I rolled the ends like a condom and between the two I put baby powder. The result was that the 2nd tip stayed put to the ball but slipped on the 1st tip. It's a really tight fit and works pretty much like new.
Can you please explain your latex glove fix in more detail or post some photos of how you installed them? Or is there a link to the fix you mentioned seeing online? TIA
