There are mixed messages via google of whether the seal is a window out job or whether the visible seal is just an outer sealing strip that can be removed and replaced with the window in situ.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Tried to find an answer to this but struggling My 98 C2 came without the rear screen seal fitted however a new one was on the back seat. It looks like the PO has tried to bond the old one on with Sika or PU and it’s not worked and left a mess Could someone that knows draw a simple cross section of how the glass the plastic strip and the seal are assembled?

POST 3Original post

Regarding the window seal, I bought a new one for mine and discovered that if the window rubber is not perfectly clean, straight and unbroken then the new insert will not fit. The windscreen rubber has a channel that needs to be perfectly aligned for the insert to clip in, and once it’s bent it doesn’t like bending back to its original position. My body shop guy said it’s better to buy both parts new and refit it and the screen correctly. He told me (and I didn’t listen) that the new insert probably wouldn’t fit into the old rubber seal. He was right and I looked stupid.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So is there like a trim that goes into the rubber seal? I don't have that, what's it made of? What about the plastic strip that goes around the glass, that has a groove in it.

I just changed mine. old one all most fell out but the new one needed lubing up and pushed in with the use of a plastic trim removing tool. looking at your its a bit of a mess and likely the window will need removing and the whole think cleaning up before re fitting. there is 2 parts to the window seal. the rubber trim is the second part. This thread helped me do mine Thread 'Replacing 996 rear window seal' 6 May 2022 The edge of the window seal is peeling back on both bottom corners of my rear window. I assume it's just the newness is wearing off after 23 years and it's shrinking as it doesn't look like it can be glued back down as it doesn't meet the corners any more. There are mixed messages via google of whether the seal is a window out job or whether the visible seal is just an outer sealing strip that can be removed and replaced with the window in situ. Has anyone on here replaced this themselves? giraffeinbath Replies: 16 Forum: Porsche 911 996 (1997-2005)

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Damo, yeah I read that but I'm still no wiser. Is there 2 parts to the seal that are removable? I only have 1 part Mine has a hard plastic part that covers the inside edge of the glass and has a groove in it..it doesn't come out though , it looks like it goes on with the glass..correct?

POST 7Original post

Quotes source post: 2738140

Yes, it’s a push in trim a bit like the old classic cars that had a chrome insert around the windows. It used to help seal the window rubber itself but I don’t think it serves quite that purpose in this case. Just looking at yours, it’s pretty messy and I’d be surprised if a new trim piece would secure into it very well. The inside edge of the outer trim is the window seal (harder plastic), the bit you can see me peeling back (softer rubber) here is the insert that fits in to that.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

That's great thanks for doing that..much appreciated.

POST 9Original post

They always go in the bottom corners, then tend to lift up and people run to re seal with silicone seal or other glue type product. I did mine a few years back, bought the replacement from OPC it was cheaper then anywhere else. You will need to clean the area out thoroughly before fitting the new one. I used silicone spray on the rubber to help reinsert, start at the one of the top corners and work your way round,it should just push in place with your fingers. It looks to big when you are fitting but it’s not once you’ve seated it properly

POST 10Original post

How did you get on with this project Monty? I’ve got the same problem with the bottom corners curling up. My old specialist told me it was a glass out job, so would be great to hear it’s DIYable. Also on mine the side trims with the groove move freely i.e. not fixed to the glass is that normal or have they become unstuck?

POST 11Original post

i DIYed mine last summer, was really easy took me about 30min max.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Mine is so bodged up with PU it's a glass out job , clean/scrape it all out and start again unfortunately. I'll get it done one day but it's not leaking as far as I know.

POST 13Original post

I replaced mine when I first bought the car a few years back, OPC was the cheapest place with the 10% discount. It’s just one piece that pushes into place, you need to make sure all the channels are clear before trying to insert the new rubber. Looks like yours has rotted away, you might be lucky an be able to get it out with a plastic trim tool.

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Am I right in saying one of the trim pieces goes on the glass before it's bonded in to the body? I think that's what I deduced last year and left it for that reason. So if it's damaged like mine is , the glass has to come out for that hard plastic part to be replaced.? I've got the same at the front too, it has a generic off the shelf "seal" that keeps flying off at speed I've also got the same problem with the sunroof trim , it's not there at all but that can be fitted fairly easily I think.

POST 15Original post

I thought it was just one piece but I’m sure there will be someone along with more knowledge then me.
