Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Reported cause
Bottom line, the issue is corrosion on the connections and within the cable loom itself.
Leading evidence: 'corrosion' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'corrosion' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace positive cable as well' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
Even in case it is just a starter motor in your case, I would highly recommend to replace the positive cable as well.

When running the car is wonderful and I am looking forward to the drive starting after lunch today.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I had my starter motor rebuilt, but it never fixed the issue.
On holiday in France and my '04 C2 has become an unreliable starter. Sometime it starts on the first turn of the key hot or cold, other times several attempts to start are needed....but it does start eventually. Once running the performance is as always.
Local Porsche garage diagnosed the problem as being the fuel pump which they repleaced for me ....however the starting remains as difficult as before and as above.
Any thoughts as to what the problem might be?
It can also be a bad or dying starter motor. Not uncommon on 996 or 997.
However, many garages misdiagnose bad starting behaviour on 996. There is a chance in your case that the positive cable is bad. It is very common, that this is the culprit. I had my starter motor rebuilt, but it never fixed the issue. Changing this cable did fix all my starting issues. I chose to upgrade it to the 997 part, since apparently this is a better build / stronger version. Bottom line, the issue is corrosion on the connections and within the cable loom itself.
In order to further narrow the diagnosis:
- mainly cold start issues is pointing in direction of starter motor (due to cold & higher resistance)
- my car with bad positive cable ONLY had warm start issues. After being in gas station for 10 minutes for example, or especially difficult start after washing the car somehow. Maybe this has something to do with moister / water vapor in the engine bay or something like that.
Even in case it is just a starter motor in your case, I would highly recommend to replace the positive cable as well. This saved my a lot of starting anxiety.
This is the part number for the 996 one: 99660701901. I have to look for the 997 version number, but I bought one second hand in good condition from 997. It has been 5 years now and 0 issue anymore.
From what you say it's cranking as normal , nice and strong yes ??
If it's not starting from then on it's either fuel or ignition but most likely fuel , could be fuel pressure reg or even filter.
I feel for you, I won’t list what I had done to sort my hot start issues out, it’s now sorted, yours doesn’t sound like the same issues I was having. Have you got a code reader? I keep my iCarSoft PO 2.0 in the car to diagnose any issues.
If you’ve got any codes showing that will up us diagnose. None of my issues showed up on the dash as a CEL etc
Good luck
Thank you for your thoughts. I have to say the starter turns the engine over strongly, so, for the moment I have put the cable replacement on the back burner but thank you for raising it. I agree with Alex and Uncle Monty the fuel delivery is the problem and yet at speed the car drives as normal!!! Could it be that the increase in fuel pressure at speed is such that it forces its way through a clogged fillter and allows the car to run at 70-80mph faultlessl?? The garage tried interogating the engine but there were no codes displayed!
No..if the filter is clogged it'll be worse at throttle but it's highly unlikely to be that unless you've filled up somewhere dodgy.
Usually an OBD will pick up if you've got misfires/ignition issues.
It's almost like your fuel pressure in the rails is dropping sometimes so you have to build up pressure to get it to start and other times is perfectly normal.
Maybe try turning full ignition on but not cranking it and leave it for a while to see if that makes a difference.
I'm sure you and the garage would know if you've got a fuel leak. I hope it doesn't get worse , how long have you got left of the holiday?
Uncle Monte thank you for your thoughts. I have tried waiting with the ignition on and this does seem to make a difference sometimes but not always. It often then starts first time for a couple of occasions before going back to the old routine.
1000 miles of D roads back to London taken gently over four days. When running the car is wonderful and I am looking forward to the drive starting after lunch today.
That also has been on my list od possibles but after 200 miles today over superb D roads I am still uncertain of how a defect can exist at start-uo and disappear at speed.. Thank you again for your thoughts I will keep you appraised of developments.
