Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

2001 996..Tiptronic Just took the car out and a problem.. Tooting along about 40mph put my foot down a little to accelerate and she lost gears.. She seemed to have dropped into neutral. I put her into N then back into D and she drove ok. I've noticed twice in the past couple of weeks she flashed up something about gear selection incorrect. ? But it only lasted a couple of seconds and then was gone.. Any help would be greatly appreciated..

POST 2Original post

First thing is to try and pull any error codes. This will hopefully point you in the right direction

POST 3Original post

When was the last time the oil was changed in the gearbox?

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

According to the history about 40k miles ago since serviced..

POST 5Original post

Sounds like a multi function switch selector box on the side of the gearbox. If you can recover the gear selection by reselecting the gear, that's what I think it is, though the symptom is usually accompanied by a D and 4 flashing on the selector display. Can be tested for fault codes to confirm.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Feels more like a sensor or switch, the gearbox seems fine..

Even if the box is showing another fault that’s a long time between oil changes. Mine on my old box went into limp mode which meant it wouldn’t change gear. An oil change sorted it out and it never gave me a problem again

POST 8Original post

Connected, I hope. My wife's audi a5 is an auto and started causing issues. Main dealer quoted £6k to resolve. I took it to.a specialist who performed the correct service for a switch tropic box, £250 all in and we never had the fault again.
