I fitted a GATES belt ( £16.00) as these seem to be the best, which was bought from a car parts supplier on fleabay, the Water pump I have fitted is a Magnet Marelli with the steel fins instead of plastic and that was also off of fleabay and cost £ 63.95 delivered and it comes with gasket from this seller

I have just completed the water pump, belt and 71-degree thermostat replacement it took me with some knowledge about 12 hours all in, but I was meticulous, the problem was removing the pump in the car and then replacing it whilst engine was in the car, but it was possible and I now have no leak, as I tested it with water and ran it to temperature, I should have read all the paperwork I got with the car as it had a new 71-degree thermostat fitted 600 miles ago!!!

I think Richard was directing you to a page where there are good instructions as to replacing the pump rather than for the actual purchase.

Before I attempt to replace this is the job fairly easy, I have changed water pumps on other cars and brakes and stuff so I have a bit of knowledge, also where is the best place to buy one and what is the usual make of the original oem and are GATES belts anygood if anyone has any experiance of doing this and the most reliable make to replace it with please let me know
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Gates belts are fine, but I can't help with the water pump itself.
Hello HarleyD
I have been thinking about this job myself as something that will need doing at some point. You can buy the pump and needed gasket from Eurocarparts. Design911 also have multiple options for replacement water pumps and even do a pump/gasket/thermostat/auxbelt kit. The job itself looks to be quite straightforward assuming you have some basic tools and space to work in.
the link richard sent me is full of diy info for the 996 i will attempt it, now i have looked on you tube it is a fairly basic job and will take about 2 to 3 hours to complete

[/h1]All in all I am happy with the job and apart from jiggling the pump about to get it out and again back in that took the most time, I have now flushed with water the cooling system, and hopefully removed any of the broken fins off the pump, I am now waiting to get some Porsche approved g12 or g30 antifreeze I'm not sure which is best, then I can start driving it again!!
I had to cut the clamps holding the exhaust to the engine plate but I have 2 new ones on the way, apart from that a fairly easy job, and I found it easier to fit the new water pump gasket from above after the new pump was ready to bolt down don't try to fit it with sealant before getting it through the tight hole back into the bay as you will just break or tear the gasket, you have been warned, but, save yourself a few hundred its not that hard to do!! with some knowledge
Thanks to Richard Hamilton for sending me the above link!!
Believe it or not my water pump went when out for a drive a few years back. I called out the AA who stated that if I could get a new pump he would fit it there and then by the roadside. Rang Eurocarparts, went to get it, returned and the AA guy fitted it. Couldn't believe it. Needless to say he got a huge tip.
