If that works, the locks themselves are probably fine and the issue is more likely remote receiver / alarm control / coding.
Leading evidence: 'more likely remote receiver / alarm control / coding' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'more likely remote receiver / alarm control / coding' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). What you're doing is actually disconnecting power for more than a few seconds to 'reboot' the fob.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all. Just picked up my 2001 996. . Light working, Signal sent but not opening locks.
It has two keys, both little lights show when pressed and according to a test a signal is being sent to the car.
But nothing happens re locking or unlocking on the car.
What further tests can I try to ascertain the problem
Thanks in advance for any assistance.
First check whether the central locking works from the key in the door and from the interior lock switch. If that works, the locks themselves are probably fine and the issue is more likely remote receiver / alarm control / coding.
Then the simple resync
1. key in ignition, turn ignition on, then press the remote button.
2. Also try locking/unlocking manually with the blade, then press the remote again close to the car.
Take the batteries out both of them, put them in the other way round to reverse the polarity for around 10 seconds, then switch them back the right way round and try them again.
Car locks/unlocks fine with key. But after a few seconds alarm sounds. Put key in ignition and turn, alarm stops.
No joy with the key in ignition thing..
That will have no effect owing to the design of the batteries. ie they will not connect with reverse polarity which could be a good thing if circuitry not diode protected.
What you're doing is actually disconnecting power for more than a few seconds to 'reboot' the fob.
Can’t really help except i have one key that does the same thing and nothing ive read about and tried has revived it. Still starts the car though.
Thankfully i have one fully working too, so its resigned to being the ‘spare’
Ah the joys of older cars..
Now I can unlock the drivers door with the key and start the car but the passenger door is locked. Plus of course the remote fob still doesn't work.
That's normal with the key - only unlocks the driver's door. You only have about 10 seconds too before the alarm goes off if you don't engage they key in the ignition.
I found out the hard way yesterday about the alarm..Stuck outside a pub with the alarm blasting, didn't know I had to jam the key in the ignition pronto..
Can anyone recommend a good auto sparky to fix the fob issue and now indicator problems in sort of Slough/Windsor/West London. ? Experience in Porsche would be handy..
