so, just to complete the picutre, for anyone else in the same boat, I finally got Continental Ultracontacts fitted front and back, but not from the same company.

So in the end they fitted the fronts and I got the rears from 'Black Circles' the next day.

the PS2 N3 does not seem to be available in the other recommended trye size which is 205/50 R17, the Pirelli's seem to be pretty rare, only found them on EBAY, not a place I would buy performance tyres from.

I am a 996 Newbie and am looking to change all 4 tyres on my Carerra 4 cabrio, so that all the tyres are the same manufacturer and spec, it seems to me this makes sense for the 4 wheel drive system.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

I got a text Tuesday morning from National Tyres offering to change the rear (255/40) Continentals to Michelin PS4's as they were 'out of stock' of them in that size.

If you do end up having to use camskill, make sure you have a willing fitter available first, ive used a wheel refurbisher in the past to fit new tyres as part of a refurbishment for “free”
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I am a 996 Newbie and am looking to change all 4 tyres on my Carerra 4 cabrio, so that all the tyres are the same manufacturer and spec, it seems to me this makes sense for the 4 wheel drive system. This is complicated by the fact my 2002 vehicle has R17 rims, and the specified rear tyre is 255/40 R17. This is a very old spec tyre size, so its practically impossible to get a modern version of this tyre. Our 'good friend' CHATGPT has suggested changing the tyre size on the rear to 245/45 R17. This seems a sensible compromise to me. I am not that fussed about the car being 'historically correct', I just want to get the best drive I can at a sensible price for 4 new tyres. Any comments on this, is there any downside I am missing?
225/40/17 is only showing up as N rated spec tyres from Michelin being the PS2 N3 and Pirelli the Rosso N5
otherwise try for a 245/40/17, which will have a minimal change in the radius with the newer Michelin Pilot Sport 5 PS5 available as well as a wider range of other brands
I have PS4 in the correct sizes, but looks like fronts are no longer available now?
If i was to buy again, probably go budget and get some matching nexens or something, I doubt you would notice any difference in grip on the road, maybe faster wear, slightly noisier etc.
The issue is, on a 4 wheel drive, Carerra 4 I am of the view it makes sense to have all the tyres the same, but finding both tyre sizes in any manufacturer is very difficult. the PS2 N3 does not seem to be available in the other recommended trye size which is 205/50 R17, the Pirelli's seem to be pretty rare, only found them on EBAY, not a place I would buy performance tyres from. The N rated just goes out the window when you try to get all the tyres the same. I havent checked the Michelin Pilots as they are probably more than I want to spend and it's not as if I will be taking the car to the racetrack! So far the only tyre I have found that supports both sizes is Kumho Ecsta, which are cheap, but I am concerned about the ride quality and long term degradation of these tyres. I will report back how I get on as I can't be the only 996 owner with R17 rims out there. Long term I think maybe a rim upgrade to R18's is going to be required.
The first reply you received was the correct one imo. And the Michelin PS5 is by no means a "racetrack" tyre, it's not even a UHP one. There's also the F1 Asymmetric 6 in R17.
it's a problem many of us are facing
N rated updates haven't happened in years for older generation cars
noting there are obvious ride comfort benefits from the 17"
the 996 3.4 litre cars did run 225/45/17 on the rears
an 18" is an option
my recommendation would to still stick to a premium brand even it's not a UHP or N rated tyre,
Camskill only have 2 tyres 255/40R17, Pirelli and Michelin, the Pirelli definitely does not have a matching 205/50, they also didnt have one for the Michelin PS2, but there might a couple out there somewhere else. In the meantime I did find both tyres at National Tyres, Continentals. They did not show up on their standard search, so I am waiting to see if my order gets refused when they get in on Monday!
Thank You @philc1987. I didn't manage to find these on Camskill. Don't know why not. This is a very useful backup if my Continentals dont work out, I genuinely won't be suprised if I get a call on Tuesday saying 'computer says no'!
Its not the best site layout I’ll agree. But just click on the size without the OE manufacturer details next to it to get the non N rated tyres.

I got a text Tuesday morning from National Tyres offering to change the rear (255/40) Continentals to Michelin PS4's as they were 'out of stock' of them in that size. I tried to change to fronts for that brand, but out of stock on the 205/50's everywhere on the PS4's.
So in the end they fitted the fronts and I got the rears from 'Black Circles' the next day. So my take on this if you are looking for a set of 4 tyres the same for a Carerra 4 running R17 rims you will have very limited options at the moment (may 2026): @philc1987 suggested Falkens, they appeared to have stock at Camskill at time of writing. Michelin PS4's lots of people have the 255/40, but very few have the 205/50's, I only found a few and none that provided a fitting service.
The Continental Ultracontacts are more of a grand tourer tyre, but thats suits me, but at the moment , even for those you will need to get the fronts and the backs at diffferent places. Plan B is of course to upgrade the rims to R18, but you end up with super low profile tyres if you go down his route.
I don't know why the OP refused to take advice, to each their own, but the best 17in tyres for the 996 are Michelin PS5 and Goodyear F1 Asymmetric 6, both readily available, both amazing performance and reviews. The Ultracontact is a commuter tyre with OK reviews.
Michelin PS5 and Goodyear F1Assymetric 6 are not readily available in 205/50 R17. You can get Michelin PS4 maybe and the Goodyear's in that size are Assymetric 2, which is a completely different tyre.
